A Matter of Shatner's Perspective

Although I've seen celebs out in the wild I generally leave them alone because I don't really have anything to day to them.

The one exception was in 2019 when I was at mixer and there was Seth Green, and we had a nice conversation about his voice acting work and why he might not ever do another game like Mass Effect.

 

I wonder if Shatner ever wishes he never got the Trek gig and just did character parts and films? Or got the lead in a show with a normal lifespan and following? I wonder if they all wished that?

 

Maybe. But given the millions he made from the movies who knows?

They already have hookers at cons....just not of the TJ variety.

 

Not necessarily Shatner, although what he tweets almost always dances around a tongue in cheek and mean rebuttable to somebody. But I've always found social media to just bring out the worst in people. And that has somehow gotten a lot worse since it became the No.1 way to communicate with people it seems.

Or maybe I've just gone off interaction with other human beings altogether... in any form... be they celebrity or not.

 

I suppose Shatner wouldn't be that interesting if he posted "I love Star Trek" all the time.

I like the way Leonard Nimoy put it in an interview circa 1978, as to the thinking of Paramount executives: "Kids are lining up around the block to see Star Wars. Ours is called Star Trek. Let's go." Very matter of fact and dazzlingly superficial.

Some posters for TMP had the tag line "There is no comparison." It looked like a boast, but after you'd seen The Motion Picture, it read more like an excuse.

 

His "perspective" is sometimes cringe worthy. (link) The replies to his tweet are pretty appalling.

 

Although I'm practically itching to respond to this Tweet. This is not the forum but I'll just say that Keith and his male friends should move somewhere safe.

Anyway I personally don't like the way that Shatner thinks he can speak for Nichols, Nimoy and Takei. You know he said Star Trek for Leonard was just a paycheck, the others were looking for their next job. He says they were liars when they say Star Trek was of some significance in their lives.
Of course he was right in that actors (like him) always were looking for work and their big break and there's no shame in that. But there's examples where Nimoy fought for the integrity of the character in the series and in the movies.
If Shatner is only in it for the money (nothing wrong with that) then admit it, don't assume that you speak for the 'day players'. Obviously the fame or infamy is enjoyable to the others. I'm sure Nichols is pleased that she (her character) inspired girls/people of colour to take up technical professions. If Shatner doesn't care or is embarrassed by Kirk inspiring fans then he should just speak for himself.

 

Actually Shatner didn't say that Nimoy just thought it was a paycheck.

What he said was Leonard Nimoy was happy for a steady paycheck.

And if you knew the history of Leonard Nimoy's acting career prior to Star Trek; Leonard Nimoy had never had an acting job (including the movie serials he was in In the 1950s as a paid extra); that lasted for more than two weeks.

So yeah, Shatner's comment with respect to Leonard Nimoy was probably very accurate.

 

There's also the fact that Nimoy leapt from Star Trek's cancellation right into Mission: Impossible. That wasn't a fine-artist demanding meaningful work. It was a guy who wanted to keep earning a terrific living (for the time period), even if it meant playing a flat character in by-the-numbers plots.

 

Well, Nimoy did go on to say that he expected a lot of great acting opportunities out of playing a master of disguise—and when that didn’t materialize, he asked to be let out of his contract early, after only two years. He gave up quite a bit of money when he walked away from Mission.
