"What Are Little Girls Made Of?" is the first TOS episode I remember seeing that I really connected with. That creepy vibe with all the robots down in the cave, it's great. The strangeness of the two naked Kirk's spinning on that table. Ruk. There's a lot of great imagery in this ep.

"Little Girls" was one of the first (?) sci-fi attempts to put a humanoid mind into an android body. The ultimate in cybernetics. Nice to see it saved. That and Kirk's got the eye candy goin' on too, talk about that good old classic song:

Cliche as it was, seeing Kirk nag a computer to self-destruct mode was always funny. Unless the alien fritter invaded the ship's computer or if Spock's mind was stuck inside of one, since then and only then he wouldn't do his obligatory AI-smackin' routine of:

I'm going to eliminate The Survivor, because while never seen again, the main species it introduces (the Vendorians) is an intriguing look at a shape-shifting being, and while a bit of a retread on The Man Trap, it ends with the "evil shapeshifting alien" actually having been transformed from his experience into a force for good, and rides off into the sunset as a changed man (in more ways than one): the true Survivor of the story. Also, while never explored in tie-in fiction, I really like the implication that the Romulans utilized Vendorian shapeshifters in their war against Earth. It brings up so many possibilities.

Oh, but wait, you didn't mention the Vendorian. Well, too bad, that's my reasoning. The Caitians are a great race as well, and we'll undoubtedly learn more in the upcoming Lower Decks, but my heart will always be set on the Vendorian species.

I have a tender, sssssoft spot for:

THE ANTICANS & THE SELAY: “Lonely Among Us”, TNG Season 1

The Anticans were well-realized, and even spar against Riker over what each side thinks is barbaric.

The Selay looked plastic, but the voices were ssssublime. The blu-ray restoration brings out a much more vibrant color scheme that benefits them as well.

Both showed potential so it's great they made returns in some form.

That and I sorta like the plot of an energy critter taking over the crew, one by one, to learn more after the transporter brings it aboard. Rather good twist for Picard as well, even if a big flashy "P" almost stretches things. Best of all, some themes in this regard (crew acting all different due to unknown ailment) may have been inspired by "The Naked Now" but were handled a lot more creatively.

Budget limitations often limit how elaborate the alien makeup can be, but it must have been a good budget week. The episode is hilarious, and it's good that the aliens have a comical look as well. They look like potatoes!

So many good ones still! I'm going with "Ensign Ro" and the BAJORANS. The Bajorans get a bad rap sometimes, but I found them such a fantastic vehicle for starting to deconstruct the Trek mythos. Obviously DS9 does most of this, but it starts on TNG... with Ro they do the stories they could have done with Tasha, had she survived until the arrival of competent writers.

Saving FERENGI: “The Last Outpost”, TNG Season 1

I'm saving this episode more because of the species than the episode itself, in which the Ferengi are portrayed nothing short of ridiculous (and ridiculously unsympathetic, too). They turned out to be a great species, in the end.

Even so, the first part of this episode isn't really that bad, actually - there are enough intriguing concepts and suspense to go around. The crew is about to meet those mysterious Ferengi, whom they know practically nothing of, despite hearsay, and information on them is only released very gradually during the episode. There's a nice buildup here: first we see their ship, then there's a short fight, then we have audio communications, then distorted visual communication, and only on the planet we actually learn they are diminutive. The situation with the planet is equally nicely handled. First they think they are being held at gunpoint by the Ferengi, only to learn later the Ferengi think the same but in reverse. and it's only then the focus shifts to the planet. The concept of this long-dead but in its heyday stunningly powerful t' Kon empire is equally intriguing, though sadly we never learn any more about it (and neither is that fancy holodisplay we learn this from ever seen again).

It's only when the action shifts to the planet's surface (when the episode is more than half over) that the ep goes south, with those ridiculous moustache-twirling Ferengi whipping our crew. And this T'Kon guard buys into Rikers Federation propaganda way too easily ....

Oops... I need to keep my "INDISCRETION" quiet.

A good episode that introduces Ziyal, and a good B story with Sisko and Kasidy. Dukat/Kira scenes are always great, and an episode full of them elevates it even further.

The Breen... cool species, and still very mysterious. They never did explain that despite no one knowing what a Breen looks like under the helmet, Kira and Dukat do. You'd think that information would be out there...

This time around, I'll try not to hijack TV theme song lyrics for comedic effect. Meanwhile, there's story about a lovely lady...

EL-AURIANS: “The Child”, TNG Season 2

I'll first discuss the story - it's (IMHO) an underrated Troi piece. Definitely more an adult outing as, if nothing else, kids won't understand what the glowing incorporeal critter is doing under various crewmembers' bedsheets. It's not an intergalactic mopping service, which might be the only thing that (some) kids could relate to... eww... The plot is actually fairly tissue paper-thin, but elevated by adult themes and - even more - the new characters and actors performing them.

Guinan was a great addition to the cast. Whoopi Goldberg was an absolute coup. Known for comedy, Whoopi shows far more range with dramatic acting and I loved it every time I saw her name in the opening credits because, if nothing else, the episode would have at least one robust scene.

Guinan pretty much got what I think may have been intended for post-season 1 Troi, but Troi would still get some meaty stuff in this and later seasons ("Ensigns of Command" has a very poignant piece about inter-species communication technically being miraculous in of itself and proceeds to educate the audience, via Picard, the basics and it's great stuff. Or I thought it was but I'm Asperger's and have always striven to be more neurotypical... but I digress and from a digression too...)

Guinan through the years would slowly be phased out, only to return in "Generations" in the most slapdashed way. Now she's reduced to a candle fetish and saying nobody can go into the nexus but once they do they won't want to leave... Worse, she barely sees another of her own kind - Dr. Soran - who'd rather while away the time by verbally light up some s'mores around Picard just to annoy him based what the captain just happened out.

Soran should have been written as evil instead of just another attempt at a "dastardly yet let's try to make him someone to feel sorry for villain", which isn't easy to accomplish at the best of times. It's not a bad idea in many ways, but the audience might care more for the four billion people down there if they saw a more concrete threat scheming from orbit. The fact we got glimpses based on how he treated Picard, and especially in deleted scenes with Geordi and Kirk, just show how Soran should have been. Then again, some in the audience do understandably prefer sympathetic villains, or if nothing else hated Kirk being killed. IMHO, Kirk's original death was far stronger - and tragic - all because of Soran's villainy. Soran just needed more polish, if not a consistent or at least equilibrant direction.

Malcolm McDowell takes what's on paper and creates a performance to mix in all of the attributes and is not unsuccessful. He works great with Stewart and it shows. His scene about time is the fire is perfectly underplayed.

The Search Part One was a pretty breathless way to start season three, and I was so excited finding out about Odo's origins. The final twist that his people are the Founders part two was a great way of giving everything a more personal stake for him.

The Karemma I'm more eh about, but it was good continuity with Rules of Acquisition when the Dosi first gave the Ferengi information about the Dominion.

I've got to give it for "The Game" and the KTARIANS. Sentimentally, I LOVED this one as a kid, and this episode was waaaaaaaaay ahead of it's time -- it's all about addiction to iPhone games, which did not yet exist! You could drop Etana into a boardroom scene with contemporary scheming tech company execs, and she'd fit in seamlessly.

As I explained in an earlier game, I still have a soft spot for “Distant Voices”, DS9 Season 3 . That Lethean looked pretty intimidating, too. Pity we never saw any others of that race again with their telepathic attack ability.
