Missing all of the preseason practices was nothing, Guys do dumb stuff to get out of it all the time. It's not what the Raiders could have done, it was what they should NOT have done, and that was sending him that notice of his owing over $200k in fines and stripping his contract of guaranteed money.

He was all set to practise and play until the Raiders made that boneheaded more.
BS. The Raiders were no more "invested" in AB than the Pats are now. It would be different if we'd given up a first or second rounder for him. He hardly practised with the Raiders, never played in a game for us. You might have a point if this had happened later in the season after we'd maybe become dependent on his production. We even were able to reacquire a receiver we liked who we may have cut for AB.

Other than the energy AB's stint as a Raider has seemed to generate for us, it's like he was never here...or there. BTW, that energy now belongs to the Pats. ;)
You're blaming the accuser, bro, not a good look.

I mean, provably false, but ok. Ignoring that you literally had a lot invested in him financially, and the multiple draft picks you paid for him, he was far and away your best offensive player. At least skill position wise, and pretty easy argument that he's much more talented than Carr too. He was kind enough to act like a moron and help you out with the guaranteed money part, though, so that at least keeps this from killing the Raiders. Your #2 receiver had 42 catches last year, and for another team, so not like you cut AB because he was second fiddle to OBJ or something.

Not that Vegas odds mean that things will happen, either, but empirically your odds of winning the Superbowl changed from 40-1 to 80-1 the second you cut him. Bunch more similar statistics depending on whether you want to talk about wins/losses expectations, playoff berth, etc., but he was clearly going to be a key cog in any success that Oakland had this year. That's kinda a big dropoff. Not that it means a ton, or that they can't overcome it, but it's a setback and loss of talent, no arguing that.

Pats, on the other hand, are not dependent on AB, clearly a luxury as I mentioned. Superbowl MVP WR is still playing for the team, that Josh Gordon kid is ok if he can stay off the weed, and they had D. Thomas as a backup guy if needed until they cut him to make room for AB. Vegas did jump up the odds for the Pats after the acquisition, but it went from 7-1 to 5-1, sorta reinforcing my point that they weren't exactly hurting and desperate for help before AB showed up. And if it doesn't work out (on the field or now with off the field problems), he'll get cut and the Pats probably won't be desperate for WR help. It's a 1 year contract with some outs in in for nonsense (technically with an option year to massage the cap numbers, but it's a 1 year deal like Revis had a few years back)

So yeah, I'd say that Oakland was more invested in him than the Pats are.

Le’Veon Bell is getting an MRI on his shoulder today. Sam Darold has mono and could miss multiple weeks.

Yet, the Patriots are still going to run Brown out there on Sunday with this floating around. So much for taking sexual assault seriously.

No criminal complaint yet, to be fair. And unless they cut him or the NFL suspends him, they have to pay him and he counts against the roster and cap, so...

Although it’s Miami this week, so could probably win with a 20 man roster, but still, until there’s a criminal complaint or NFL random decides to do something, why is the team the arbitrator of justice?

If you're trying to say that the Raiders offered him a bigger contract with bigger guarantees, that's true. But AB was never given that guaranteed money. What he likely got was his signing bonus which is probably what he has also received from the Pats. In fact, if the NFL doesn't come down on AB before the season starts and the Pats pay him his guaranteed money, Pats will literally have a bigger financial investment in him than the Raiders did.

Pats will be hoping he doesn't at some point get a longer suspension or otherwise implode, same as the Raiders were hoping before they cut him.
Yes, he would have been our best player. And yes we could have used his talent, that's why we traded for him. There isn't a team in the league who couldn't have used AB's talent, including, obviously, the Pats.

In terms of investment vs loss, Derek Carr would still actually have been a bigger loss than AB, so would our no. 1 pick, Josh Jacobs, etc.

We didn't draft him, nor plan our season around him. He fell into the Raiders' lap the same way he fell into the Pats' -- unexpectedly. We go back to our original plan.
And the fact that you can find stats online proves what point? That we needed AB more than the Pats? Or do you think it proves your assertion that he was "make or break" for the Raiders? Despite your opinion only time will tell about how much losing AB will cost us if anything.

What, you're now hanging your hat on Vegas odds?
What you've been arguing is your belief that the Raiders needed AB more than the Pats. That is a fact that didn't require much thought. But as far as an actual investment, like I said before, it's little bit like losing a player for the season in training camp. The good thing is that you have the time to plan your season without that player. The Raiders weren't even looking to trad for a wideout, AB just fell out of the sky. But he was so detached from the team that in terms of planning the season, it's like he was never there.

Pats already have a bigger investment than you maybe care to admit considering they just traded a receiver for him. And yes, I know, Thomas was a "scrub", but just like that 3rd and 5th round pick we gave up, it is the cost of doing business, but not a back breaker.[/QUOTE]

So, the Raiders organization should accept immature and childish behavior from a professional football player instead of applying rules that the CBA, his contract and the organization allow?

Not to mention the near criminal behavior of threatening your boss in front of witnesses. The Raiders should give him a pass? :wtf:

That sets such a horrendous precedent for other players that the organization couldn't' function like that for long. It's ludicrous. AB conducted himself in a very unprofessional manner and it cost him money.

At the end of the day? They are his employer and writing the checks. This reflects badly on them from my POV.

Well, yes. More my point was that his behaviors caused the consequences of fines.

But, football players and their salaries are a whole other discussion.

They aren’t a legal body. They are a corporation who has an employee making them look bad. Get a very public DUI or domestic violence or sexual assault, see if your employer waits for due process or drops you like a hot potato.

If the text didn’t exist, I would probably be more amenable for the process to run its course.

Fair point. I'm just a little more cautious because in this day and age accusations of sexual assault are enough to tank someone's career. My mom almost lost her medical license over a false accusation that would have put her on the sex offender's list.
