Did pre refit constitution class ships have vertical warp cores?

TOS had a few "alternate engineering" sets, too: constant, gradual redresses of the main set, a surprising dilithium regeneration room, the odd nook or cranny that didn't fit the bigger picture unless you assumed it was "somewhere else". Entire "engineering decks" were occasionally referred to as well.

Underlying this all were two plot references to the place being a maze where one could set up a condo complete with a pool and a squash court and remain undiscovered until an opportunity for secretively leaving the ship presented itself. Forget about engineering decks - "engineering hull" apparently should be taken literally, too!

Which means there's very little problem with fitting every piece of engineering ever seen on screen for a given ship into that hull simultaneously. At most, we need to leave a bit of space for the shuttle facilities - and in the Kelvin movies, those were seamlessly integrated, in ST:ID without as much as a single solid bulkhead between the two different areas, even.

Fan service is one way to supply some continuity, but the term "fan service" has a broader implication of "Something fans want to see, or something we think fans want to see." If the latter instance, they're wrong at least as often as they're right, and either in direct contradiction to continuity, or at least providing a questionable continuity.

For example, how many more siblings can Spock have, especially ones that we've never heard about? To make things easier for continuity, I'm going to go on record and say that Amanda was a Mormon who wanted as many children as possible.

I've been thinking about this statement, and as much as I like it, do you think they were trying to do fan service, or trying to "pleasure themselves"? As I recall, somebody somewhere said in an interview that they were viewing this as wrapping up not only Enterprise, but the franchise as well, and they thought (for some odd reason that I just don't get) that the way to do that was to include TNG. This was also (if I recall correctly) put forth as the reason for the final montage at the very end. It sounds like it might have been their wants rather than fan wants.

At the same time, as I've said elsewhere, the definition of "fan wants" covers a very wide gamut. Some fans just want to see new ship designs. Some want more of the future (and they're about to get it); some want more of the past. Some geek out on tech, others are happy that Picard is woke. I'm not sure that there is such a thing as "fan service" any longer, at least as a single, unified idea.

 

The ENT finale was all Berman (and Braga). I believe it was he who called TATV a “valentine to the fans” or some such bullshit (when in reality it was more of a toothy blowjob - with braces) around the same time going on a tone-deaf rant over ENT not being “the Manny Coto show”, despite the fact that Coto nearly single-handedly un-fucked what B&B did in the prior three seasons. Sadly, Coto’s efforts weren’t enough to save the doomed show. Too much damage was done.

The passage of time often erases the mistakes done by others, and can sometimes even lead to lionizing the same. Some of us remember, though.

 

Judging by that thread on Berman’s Twitter where he asked how people enjoyed Picard I think the Berman era is firmly in the nostalgia zone now for many people. The bad episodes and contentious issues tend to be forgotten.

Plus when you’ve got streaming/DVDs/Blu-Rays you don’t have to wait a whole week for another episode so it doesn’t matter if a duff episode like Sub Rosa or Threshold is on, there will be another episode along in 45 minutes (or sooner if you hit the skip button).
