Ahead of this week’s bit Star Trek Universe panel that comes out of San Diego Comic Con @ Home tomorrow, CBS has started the festivities by officially announcing the release of Star Trek: Picard Season 1 on Blu-ray and DVD, coming home to fans on October 6.

Coming in both standard and special Steelbook-packaging releases, the first season of Star Trek: Picard will arrive on Blu-ray in a multi-disc set containing both the ten-episode freshman run of episodes, but a number of special features including behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, and commentary tracks.

A first look at the special Steelbook release of Picard debuted with today’s announcement as well; while it’s not yet listed for preorder availability, we expect that this will be an exclusive release at Best Buy stores in the United States — following the lead of how Discovery‘s first two Steelbook releases were Best Buy exclusives.

As we’ve long speculated, the Star Trek: Picard Season 1 Blu-ray set will also include the Short Trek prequel tale “Children of Mars,” which first debuted on CBS All Access back in January — so for those of you who purchased the Short Treks Blu-ray release earlier this summer, here’s how you’ll be able to complete the collection.

Here’s the full breakdown of included bonus features:

    MAKE IT SO:
The co-creators and Patrick Stewart discuss bringing the iconic character back to the screen, including what was compelling enough to warrant it and the obstacles they had to overcome to make it so.

    BEHIND-THE-SCENES EPISODIC FEATURETTES:
    – STORY LOG: REMEMBRANCE
    – STORY LOG: MAPS AND LEGENDS
    – STORY LOG: THE END IS THE BEGINNING
    – STORY LOG: ABSOLUTE CANDOR
    – STORY LOG: STARDUST CITY RAG
    – STORY LOG: THE IMPOSSIBLE BOX
    – STORY LOG: NEPENTHE
    – STORY LOG: BROKEN PIECES
    – STORY LOG: ET IN ARCADIA EGO, PART 1
    – STORY LOG: ET IN ARCADIA EGO, PART 2

    COMMENTARY:
EPISODE 101, “REMEMBRANCE” – Executive producers Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman and Michael Chabon, supervising producer Kirsten Beyer, and director Hanelle M. Culpepper provide commentary about episode one of Star Trek: Picard.

    THE MOTLEY CREW:
Working outside of Starfleet, Picard gathers his crew from across the galaxy. This special feature takes a look at the actors and characters that will travel aboard the La Sirena.

    ALIENS ALIVE: THE xBs
A look inside the creative process behind the xBs of Star Trek: Picard, alongside Lead Creature Designer Neville Page, Vincent Van Dyke and his prosthetics studio team, as well as Make-Up and Prosthetics Department Head James MacKinnon about the process from start to stage.

    PICARD PROPS:
Property Master Jeffrey Lombardi takes fans on a tour of the many props created for Season One of Star Trek: Picard.

    SET ME UP:
Production Designer Todd Cherniawsky serves as the tour guide for the main stages of Star Trek: Picard, including the La Sirena, Picard’s study and the Borg Cube. Cherniawsky, Supervising Art Director Iain McFadyen and Set Decorator Lisa Alkofer also discuss the various designs for the show.

    STAR TREK: SHORT TREKS:
“CHILDREN OF MARS” – Twelve-year-old classmates Kima and Lil find themselves at odds with each other on a day that will change their lives forever.

    COMMENTARY:
STAR TREK: SHORT TREKS: “CHILDREN OF MARS” – Executive producer and co-writer Alex Kurtzman, and co-writers Jenny Lumet and Kirsten Beyer, discuss the featured Short Treks episode.

If I remember correctly the UK got DISCO a couple of week after the US release. Short Treks was around a month. Hoping the steelbook comes to the UK, the two DISCO ones did so hopefully this will as well.

This is good news, though I prob won't be purchasing it anytime soon at that price. Hopefully the audio is a massive improvement over the sound while streaming since that was the weakest aspect form me when watching on CBSAA.

Amazon has the Steelbook up for pre-order, so doesn't look like it's a BB exclusive this time around.

Hopefully this one releases in a state that has subtitles for my own language. Both seasons of Discovery had them, but Short Treks didn't, though that could be a one-off, considering it's a short story collection.

Same. Even Wal-Marts price is a bit much. It's too bad that they never have a sale on CBS stuff.

    Region 1 only...

I suppose a simultaneous region 2 release with all the same extras was too much to hope for.

Youtube might be your friend. Found extras from shows on there before.

I'd expect word before too long. It may not be simultaneous, but every Trek* so far has released in R2/4 with the same extras as the R1 version. They just sometimes take a month or so extra.

*Possibly discounting some very niche box sets, although I'm pretty sure even those all got PAL releases. And there was even (at least) one release that was a PAL exclusive, the TNG TV Movies box set.

Back in the day quite a few of the R2 DVDs had extras that the R1s lacked. I think many of these were only available as exclusive bonus discs at Best Buy etc. there. Not to mention the different packaging.

I think a number of the TNG movie blu-rays ended up being skipped over in the UK (we only got BOBW) though since they're all region free it's not too much of an issue.

I don't think we've skipped over any of the new stuff yet. The latest Short Treks so far have been DVD/Blu-ray exclusives here (never turned up on Netflix) and it's possible that Lower Decks' debut here could be on DVD/Blu-ray too since if they intended on showing it here in August in line with the US/Canada I would've expected some sort of news by now.

I'd also be shocked if "Children of Mars" ever turns up on Netflix since they'd be effectively be promoting a Amazon Prime series at that point. Also any reason why Amazon never had it? Not worth the hassle of getting the rights for just one Short Trek?

IIRC, just like the international Netflix outlets, Prime didn't understand what exactly the point of the Short Treks was and didn't bother.

I can kinda see their point considering that to begin with they were created to put out more Trek content cheaply for CBS All Access to keep subscribers. Netflix and Amazon don't have the problem of being short of content to put out.

I suppose it's not all bad news for CBS though since they can sell them as exclusive content for their DVDs/Blu-rays in those regions.

Still no sign of a region 2 release...
