Well, I'm sorry to see Cary go. I've enjoyed his thoughts about all things Trek even though we don't always agree.

Maybe I have a bit of a soft spot for grumpy engineering types, but I've seen a lot of what Cary complains about. It doesn't help that official policy is to sweep discussion under the rug with a constant "comments to PM" retort that does nothing to foster open discussion and shine light on problems with moderation. While I understand the idea is to keep threads on topic, there's no reason these things can't be discussed out in the open under Moderator Actions ... except, again, the mods want everything kept in PM.

Although Cary functions with a bit of a confirmation bias regarding unfair mods, he sure does seem to incur moderator wrath more easily than others for similar offenses. Maybe M'Sharek's just tired of dealing with a grumpy curmudgeon, but I wouldn't have warned Cary for calling a troll a troll. A firm, but civil, "Don't do that again" was all he deserved, even if it was obvious he'd do it again eventually anyway. Instead, we were left with a situation where the guy flamed was punished the same as the flamer. No wonder Cary got ticked off.

TheGodThing, Trevanian, CRA, and others have seen and received similar treatment. And while they're not always the most courteous posters, they often post with something interesting to say. Driving these people from the boards leaves the place to less thought-provoking posters who typically can't be bothered to rub enough neurons together to produce more than snarky remarks. You're throwing out good wood and keeping rot. (Although that isn't to say that there aren't thoughtful posters who are able to keep their comments diplomatic, but I'd rather have thoughtful posters, courteous or not, instead of the snarks.)

Comments to PM? Nah ... I don't think I can trust any system that keeps discussion in the dark.

The 'fascist(s)' could refer to TheGodThing, I don't know about any sex offenders here...

Oh, he meant posters? For a moment there, I thought he was talking about the staff.

Oh, I just noticed that I'm mentioned in that, his 'last', post... should've read it more carefully... it's just too much text (and I say that as someone who has read The Lord of the Rings a few times and quite enjoys Neal Stephenson's novels ;) )

It might be more productive to PM Ptrope, given that he's the moderator of this forum. I've never heard of anybody asking T'Bonz to do something like that.

Methinks thou doth protest too much. Or have too high an opinion of this thread. Or something.

    Ooh, look, nachos.

Cary - Personally, I hope you don't leave. I don't voyage into any other forums except for Trek Tech. I have always found your explanations insightful. I may not agree with them all the time, but they are at least well thought out.

I wish you good luck should you choose not to return, but hope that we can continue to see you on these boards.

I would sincerely miss your work on the 1701, but as for the personal whining and lengthy ranting posts, I won't be worried to see them go.

Sorry to see you go, Cary. As it has been previously said, your 1701 work was the stuff of legend.

Cary - consider something, if you haven't already...

Prior to the various arguments in other threads you linked to, did you have any positive regard for any of the people involved, or did you always view their opinions and actions then as you do now?

If you always felt the same about them before the various incidents, how is now any different? And if you did have some respect for them before that is now gone, just avoid dealing with them and leave it at that. Let them come poking you with sticks...then they'll be the ones doing the trolling and flaming.

I learned a while ago that in the grand scheme of things, most opinions, regardless of which side of the argument they're supporting, have about as much cascading impact as the proverbial fly hitting the windshield at 60 mph. State your case once, twice tops, and move on. If someone doesn't agree with you, that's their problem, not yours.

You said yourself that PTrope here is one of the only mods you feel is truly logical and fair in how he runs things - fine, just hang out here and avoid the rest of the board.
