Tonight I had the privilege of attending Star Trek Beyond in Sydney - and I'm now happy to TRY and answer some of your pressing questions without spoiling the film too much.

There WILL be spoilers - but I'll try and make these as small as possible. So - ask.

Where would you rank each character in terms of overall importance to the plot or screen time?

    What are your general impressions?

Incredibly even - the crew is divided into small groups very early on in the film, and each of the ensemble gets a chance to shine a lot more than in the previous films. It's still a Kirk/Spock/McCoy film (as opposed to a purely Kirk/Spock film), but we see more of the other major characters working as an ensemble.

I do believe this is the strongest of the three new-Gen films, and may be my favourite of all 13 - though this might be from the excitement of seeing the film for the first time.

It felt a lot more TOS at its best - and the one thing that comes to mind more than any other is the dynamic of the crew in the Search for Spock where they all play an integral role in the theft of the Enterprise. The team dynamic is definitely strongest in this of the three new-Gen films.

do you think that someone who likes the new dynamics like Spock/Uhura and Kirk/Bones will enjoy this movie?

The Spock/Uhura thing is relatively played down in this film, though important to their character development. Kirk/Bones is stronger than ever - as is Spock/Bones.

Can you tell us a bit about the nods to other Star Trek series and films?

I won't, because I think you'd enjoy these more seeing them for yourself (and they'd be available where spoilers are being posted) - though I'll make an exception by saying that, within the first two minutes of the film Kirk's shirt is ripped ("Again!")

thank you. Not so exiting to hear about the first since it's my favorite dynamic and I hoped I was wrong about Pegg..
glad they didn't ignore the second^

    Helm, hype factor nine, engage!

I'm both excited and surprised to see you call it a better film than those like The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country.

Would you specifically praise Justin Lin's directing, and was there much exploration of certain ideals or contemporary themes like you'd see in the older shows to go with all the action?

    Only questions I have are...
    1. Is there a new Enterprise at the very end (NCC-1701-A)?
    2. If so, does it look different to the NCC-1701 from the previous two movies?

I had my doubts, but Justin Lin was the right choice for this film. Visually, it was absolutely stunning. The Enterprise entering Yorktown base at the start of the film might well be the most beautiful shot of Star Trek ever made. The action was fast and furious, but all in service of the plot.

Yes, the NCC-1701-A. No, it's still a Constitution-class Starship, though the colour may have been slightly darker to my eyes.

TMP was slow and intellectual, TWOK was an incredibly well-rounded film, TSFS is underrated by those who don't appreciate character interdynamics, TVH was a fun and enjoyable film that wasn't quite as Star Trek as the rest, TFF was just plain bad, TUC felt like a decent enough submarine film in space, GEN was okay, FC was excellent, INS was iffy, NEM had so much potential if not for some lacklustre writing (and some incredibly odd musical cues), XI is my favourite of the first twelve, and XII had plotlines that were So Very Tired, though it looked amazing.
