    time period fits.
    use of the word Lethe
looks fit (looks dont matter, but they matter)
Lethe is a therapist, so was Cornwell
    there's a possibility there.
you may call it nonsense, but there is actually some sense to it

People discount it as Star Trek because it doesn't jive with their mental image of what Star Trek is supposed to be.

I don't think it's any farther from Bermantrek than Bermantrek was from TOS.

There's been so many interpretations and takes on Star Trek at this point that it amazes me when people say something "isn't Star Trek."

Sure bro. Tell it to Coon, Freiberger, Meyer, Bennett, Berman, Behr, Moore, Piller, Nimoy, Abrams, etc...all of whom had different interpretations of Star Trek, how it should feel, and what it should be.

Hell, Roddenberry's own interpretation changed twice (TOS vs TMP/TNG)

It is Star Trek, because CBS owns the brand and whatever they declare to be part of Star Trek simply is.

About as fun as the fan thinking that V'Ger was sent from the Borg.

While Discovery is entertaining I believe it does not deserve the Star Trek designation because it does not follow established canon. If you're going to call yourself Star Trek then follow what came before. Yes you can push into new areas but you can't completely change characters appearance from what has been presented for decades. You can't use this patently ridiculous spore drive idea that has no basis at all in Star Trek. You can't introduce a character whose adoptive parents are supposedly those of one of the most iconic characters in Trek history when there has never been any mention of that character having any kind of sibling.

Beyond that the entire story line was so convoluted, jumping all around and using cliffhangers on every episode that just moved everything way too fast. Star Trek is more a thinking person's television. It is not this breaknet speed plot line that runs so fast that it doesn't seem like it has anywhere to go after just one season. If these things were corrected Discovery could have been very good. I like the actor and I don't mind the tech updates. Unfortunately, it's just more of a series oriented toward those with short attention spans. That is not Star Trek. Star Trek explores moral and philosophical issues. Yes there is some action and tech, but that does not rule the show. The issues in each episode rule the show and that's how it should be.

Interestingly, I have been rewatching Enterprise and Discovery has made me appreciate Enterprise much more. While it was not close to the best Trek series I love how it provides background to so much of what came later (before?) in Trek and generally sticks with the Trek continuity. Discovery could learn a few things from Enterprise. I never thought I would ever say that.

Canon has nothing to do with whether or not something is "Star Trek". Canon and continuity are something to argue about, but really mean nothing.

It will be interesting when Star Trek finally enters the public domain and the only canon that will matter is people's head canon.

    Tell that to Saavik.
Tell that to transwarp beaming, transporters reversing aging, and any other number of enormous scientific advancements invented to solve the problem of the week that would probably permanently change the entire culture, yet are never heard from again.
    Tell that to Sybok.

It's complicated but it's either 95 years from 1991 or 70 years past 1966. so somewhere between 2036 to 2086, probably the latter. Assuming laws don't change. Disney tried to argue for infinite copyrights awhile back.

Disney, along with Apple and Google, will be our corporate overlords by then.

Now now, I can give you sybok, but Sáavik was not around for decades, and he’s clearly talking about the Klingons.

The spore drive may be based in ‘real worl science’ (I am keeping my face straight I promise) but it does contradict Trek tech, in some fundamental ways. At least one of your examples is from separate universe to that which we are discussing (DSC is prime at least in intent) and in this case...well, it’s not problem of the week is it? It’s problems of the season. And at least most of those other game breaking advances all had some kind of limited built in control (which they tried to do with spore drive...however, it is too game changing, and flatly messes up things like voyager...paradoxically the one series that actually prefigures the spore drive, with banjoman and his Mrs.)

But yeah. Spock could theoretically have a never before mentioned sister, who presumably has to die before series end, because she misses a hell of a lot of important family events. Pretty sure a Fal Tor Pan is a bigger deal than Christmas dinner.

Rodenberry may not own much of Trek, either gene or his descendants.

If one wants to make a never before heard of adopted sister fit, they probably can. A war that pushed the Federation to its doorstep eight years before TOS and won with a super weapon is harder to fit in.

They keep his name in the credits. That's enough to keep the latter copyright date.
