It will probably be closer to the Terran Empire.

Why wouldn't they? Orion is just a spacecraft, and the SLS is the booster meant to take it to space.

Having a dedicated "space force" might make some sense in the sadly increasingly distant future when we have large established colonies in orbit, on the Moon and Mars, and moving towards the asteroid belt, the Jovian moons, and Titan. When you might need to project force to defend an outpost or something, like The Expanse.

You'd hope we'd learn to resolve our differences in a better way by then, but even with vast improvements to how we generally resolve conflicts now versus the past, we still have a long way to go, and there will always be someone screwing things up for everyone else.

But right now, there are only six people in space and nothing is up there that can't be handled from ground-based installations, which the Air Force already does, and why I'd have no problem with reclassifying them as the Aerospace Force if Little Donny absolutely needs to make his space toys go "pew pew" and "zoom zoom" and distract attention away from other more terrestrial problems, because that's all this is about at the moment.

He's putting the cart before the horse and creating a dedicated space force that has nothing to project force to at the moment. Not that I think anything more will come of this than will come from his other bread and circuses distraction projects, like his glorious Wall. He'll make a big show of looking at some uniform swatches and concept art of kewl spaceplanes, maybe build a few incredibly expensive mockups, but it ain't happening. Which is good, because there's no point to it right now.

Now, if he wanted to invest in actual human space exploration to the Moon and Mars, I could be more receptive to that if he actually let qualified people plan it instead of just incompetently half-assing everything like his administration always does. But we know that's not going to happen, because stable genius who's the bestest at everything will have to have his grubby paws all over it, because of the zoom zoom, because he's paranoid and untrusting of others and a control freak, and because he has to be loved at every moment or it breaks his fragile ego, so he'll build something cool looking for his fans, logic be damned.

To be clear, I meant in parallel with whatever secret suborbital or space planes etc. that the poster was implying the USAF has, not with each other.

I'm a little confused why a unit with only 500 people in it needs a 4-star general as CO. That's a mid-size battalion in convential terms (a Lt Colonel's billet). I mean I could see the 'prestige' of the unit warranting a 'full bird' or maybe a one-star general but the entire USASOC is only a three-star billet and they essentially command a corps (or at least oversized division).
