Netflix has announced that they will be making a 10 episode prequel series to the Jim Henson movie The Dark Crystal, titled The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Here's the description from IGN:
It will feature new creature designs by Brian Froud, and has Louis Letterier, the director of The Incredible Hulk and Now You See Me, as director and Executive Producer, it will be written by Life in a Year's Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthew, and The 100's Javier Grillo-Maxauch. Addiss and Matthews only have a handful of credits and I'm not sure if any of them are SFF, but Grillo Maxauch on the other hand has written for The 100, Lost, The Middleman, Charmed, Medium, and a few other SFF shows over the years.

Huh, I thought we already knew this was happening. I guess what we heard was talks about getting it made.

I haven't seen the film in years, so clearly I need to, again. I'm thrilled they're going to continue use Jim Henson's Creature Shop instead going for CGI creations. That alone has me very excited about the series. Louis Letterier is a big plus, too.

Prequel series? Aside from some comics I was unaware this was an idea. I know of the intended sequel film that's been shelved and now coming out as a comic instead.

Not sure about the title though.

Ah, that might be what I was thinking of.

Glad to see they're striving to follow in Jim Henson's spirit.

Yeah, I wasn't either. I wonder how this will fit alongside the comics and prose novel series that started recently?
With the two comic series, novels, and now this, Thra is going to have a pretty full history leading up to the movie. I love that whole world, so that's a good thing in my book.

Prophets have to come from somewhere.

The Dark Crystal was one of the first films I saw in the theaters during 1982 along with Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Wasn't there a comic series that pretty much covered all there was to know of the backstory to the movie? Like literally *everything* from the origins of the planet, it's various peoples, the crystal and those spikey glowey things at the end?
If so, I'm not sure what kind of ground a prequel could cover unless they're adapting some portion of it...or ignoring it altogether and doing something different.

Between this and The Orville using real models, it's a good time to be alive.

The Creation Myths trilogy does start with the creation of Thra, but it only covers the beginning of the Skesis and Mystics. There's a lot of space left to cover.

My guess is this is when the Gelfing find out about the crystal and the shard, leading to both the prophecy and the genocide of the gelfings by the Skeksis.

One of my biggest disappointments with Creation Myths, was that it didn't cover the origins of the prophecy from the movie, but if they plan on keeping this consistent with the comics, then this would be a great way to get that story.

well, it's gonna be depressing, as it ends in defeat ... though I guess that is what Revenge of the Sith was, and I liked that production very much.

Oh, yes. Downer endings can work if done correctly.

Infant male and female Gelflings will be hidden from the evil forces. One to a moisture farm, the other to a life of luxury.... :shifty:

I would think it be farther back than that. The one castle full of Gartham doesn't seem like enough to wipe out all the Gelfing in a short period of time. It has been a thousand years since the crystal cracked. The prophecy seems like it be something older than just one or two generations back....though we don't know how long lived a Gelfing is....

Infant male rescued by mystical monks. Female child hidden in hole...later found by living potato people.

I'd like to see them do their own take of Bottin's effects from THE THING
