Spoilers Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness grade and discussion thread

I am thinking it will be more like her history in the comics where she can be either a hero or a villain depending on the decade and the storyline.

 

I wonder how much stuff got cut and/or shifted around because originally this was supposed to come before No Way Home and America Chavas was a character in that.

I remember it was more than a year ago when I first read big spoilers that the X-men, in particular, Professor X would be in the film. But other X-men were said to appear along with Spiderman also. The spoilers I had read mentioned it was James Mcavoy.

 

The reshoots were reportedly on the Solo end of significant. So stuff from last year may be applicable to the previous iteration. And reshoots during Covid could have had a huge impact on overall scope of folks were unavailable

 

By the way ... is anyone else disappointed that the "Things just got out of hand" line from the trailer didn't make it into the movie? I know it eventually popped up elsewhere, but I really liked the delivery of that line by evil Strange.

 

I was expecting it to pop up as a rhyme to that earlier moment, yeah. Films do this with trailer bits all the time though, so it's not unusual.

 

Yeah, I was really bummed out that it was omitted. Cumberbatch's delivery was perfect, both vocally and facially.

 

It's a weird omission too since I get the impression that it was meant to be a recurring motif to highlight the commonality of thinking between the Strange variants.

 

You'd think the Hot Dog vendor would have...oh, wait...

I believe Wanda stated that she has her kids and is happy in EVERY other version of the Multiverse (Yeah, sounds impossible to me too); but IF that's what the character herself believes, then in a sense (to her) her actions to have the same as all her other 'selves' make sense.

I did find it interesting is that IF the kids are physical living beings, and the progeny of Wanda and the Vision - the Vision was never seen on screen in any of the other Universes Wanda dream walked in.

Ah, I see. A deleted scene from the script, not from what was filmed. Big difference there.

And I'm glad they cut it from the script. Not only does that leave the door open for him to return properly, but that would've been a terrible way for him to go...and as the film demonstrated, there were better ways of depicting Wanda's turn to the dark(hold) side.

 

We watched it yesterday and had fun, so about a B+. Not as good as some of the other Marvel films, but decent enough.

Wanda being the villain after far too much use of the dark hold was really well done, and interesting in the light of Wandavision. I was left a tad confused at what the hell was going on, so I kept wondering how people who haven't seen the series might feel.

The Illuminati members were cool cameos (Captain Carter! but they were taken out a little too quickly.

I also wondered why Vision didn't pop up in the universe with the kids?

 

On the other hand, it wouldn't be the first time the MCU would seem to be setting up the next antagonist, only to quickly, almost off-handedly dispose of them in the opening act of the next movie. Rumlow rather leaps to mind, no? Or hell, just entirely forgotten about like Vulture & Scorpion. I also wouldn't be shocked if Adam Warlock's role won't turn out to be exactly what most are anticipating.

 

Me too. The whole impression I got from that trailer was that this was all the fault of Strange, not only Strange doing the spell in No Way Home but the evil Strange.

I guess whenever I watch a movie like this I should preface things by saying I have never read the comic book.

I just got back from seeing it and while it was good, I was a little bummed there wasn't more of a Loki connection. That series set up the whole Multi-verse thing yet based on my memory from the series and today, it seemed like it was pretty much ignored. However, I really enjoyed the movie we did get and I appreciated how closely it tied to Wandavision. I know Wanda was the villain here, but I felt really bad for the character all throughout. All she wanted was the life she had in Westview with her children and her absolute sorrow and despair at the end was really sad. What did the other universe Wanda say to her though? I think the score might have been overpowering that I had missed it.

I really liked America Chavez and look forward to seeing her again.

It's not my favorite Marvel movie (And I still feel like things are starting to get really big to the point where I may lose track of a lot of it, like I felt with Loki), but I had a good time. It was a solid B.

 

I noticed a continuity mistake. When America escapes with Wong at the end, they portal to the temple, but when they rescue Strange from the fractured universe, they’re back on the snowy mountain.

 

I can't recall exactly, but she said something like 'know that they will be loved'. Or it might have been 'protected'.

 

I thought she said, “Go be loved”.

 

No, I do remember very clearly that she was talking about the kids. Trying to offer some comfort in the knowledge that the kids would be ok.

 

Just got back from seeing it this afternoon in IMAX (and so glad I did.) Loved it. Took a little while to get going (but sometimes that's less about the film than me so be interesting to get a second viewing) but once it did it was amazing, and I agree with what someone else said, it got more Raimi the longer it went on! I was sitting there near the end thinking there'd been a huge plot hole created because how could Strange dreamwalk back to his own reality when there was no one there...and then I realised and laughed out loud at the audacity of zombie Strange (this isn't where the MCU zombies come from is it?)

I was disappointed we didn't get that "Things just got out of hand" line as well. Also took me a while to remember that Christine didn't die in DS1, that was in What if...? (damn the MCU is messing with my head!) Given how wasted McAdams was it's good that Marvel finally gave her something meatier to do (and it's good they're doing the same with Natalie Portman). I do wonder if people who hadn't seen WandaVision or What If...? might not enjoy it as much? I was also somewhat surprised that Strange's actions in No Way Home hadn't been a catalyst for this movie.

I thought Cumberbatch was great, I'm finally attuning to the accent! He had good chemistry with Gomez as America, as with Peter he can be quite fatherly when he wants to be. He and Wong are a great double act.

Great to see Stewart as Prof. X, and Krasinski as Reed (though would still love Rahul Kohli in the part!) Took my old brain a second to realise Lashana Lynch was there, and another few seconds to realise why she was Captain Marvel! I have no idea who Black Bolt is but his death was wonderfully icky. On a similar note I had to look up who Theron was playing.

Captain Carter though! I hope that's not the last time Atwell will play the role (in live action).

One part where I thought the editing let it down was the Illuminati scene. Everyone went off the fight Wanda except Prof and Mordo...except suddenly Professor X wasn't there? You don't always have to see characters enter/leave but it was quite jarring. Also the third eye sting, followed by the Clea sting seemed completely off. I did like the very last bit though. Good old Bruce Campbell

It looked great and the horror elements were wonderfully done. Definitely not just another MCU film.

Two last points.

Firstly. I am in awe of Elizabeth Olsen with each new outing as Wanda, yes she did seem more centred at the end of WandaVision but we did then see her with the Darkhold. If anything I was less bothered by her going evil than by how easily she seemed to come to her senses late on, but I guess that was the only way this was going to end. Tiny niggles aside Olsen was just amazing and I will be heartbroken if that is the last we see of Wanda.

Finally, was anyone else expecting to see another universe Wong running naked down the street being pursued by clowns at the end?

I think the movie was very good, especially for a MCU movie. And Elizabeth Olsen was just great as Wanda, she stole every scene she was in.
And I still felt sorry for her at the end.
The Illuminati got what they deserved, they were so arrogant. I am glad that captain Carter survived the battle, you can see that she was surprised that she just got a flesh wound.

I watched the movie in 3D and of course It didn't look good, a couple of blury scènes, but we couldn't see it in 2D.
