I didn't realize that the Shenzhou had a deflector on the top side of the saucer. It looks great!

I was being a bit tongue-in-cheek. The Abrams films already beat Discovery to the 23rd century use of the term.

So looking at that control panel I have to wonder what he captain even needs a crew for.

I don't see a "Jettison Pod" button, so presumably somebody still has to do that manually.

    I'm guessing they're emergency controls.

This is about the level of detail I've always assumed that captains had on those chair arms.

    Why?

Because Kirk could jettison a manned instrument pod from his chair without giving an order.

So the controls were always pretty comprehensive.

Didn't he also have a comm panel built into it?

The TOS one also had slots for data discs as well.

And you've Kirk record his log at it.

I don't recall where I found this, it may have been in this thread or forum, but

This is the picture I've been waiting to see! Sadly, from most angles the DSC captain's chair panel looks like a grid of plain boring blue squares.

Everything is looking great! There's not one thing that I dislike. I'm a little meh over the new tricorders, but I don't dislike them. Everything else ranges from freaking fantastic to very nice.

So why are they using port and starboard but forward and rear? That's so silly to me. Fore and aft are the words they couldn't remember or be bothered to look up.

    Here's the explanation.

TOS was made 50 years ago. Discovery is made now using modern technologies and modern design sensibilities so that it will appeal to a modern audience. No more needs to be said.

There is no in story explanation. It's all real world explanations. And, that is entirely fine.

^ I'm getting the impression that this is not an acceptable explanation to some.

And that is exactly my point on why DSC doesn't have to look like TOS to fit in canon. ENT already showed, for better or worse, tech in the NX-01 that is seemingly more advanced than ships launched 100 years later. The JJ films show us two additional Prime, pre-TOS ships with touch screens and monitors galore (NX-326 Franklin and NCC-0514 Kelvin). Even though DSC takes place 10 years before TOS, the Discovery and Shenzou's registries (1031 and 1227) are smack dab between the Kelvin and Connie; retaining older technology and design is plausible.

The way I see it, the tech in TOS is advanced in function despite being retro in appearance.

Exactly. The tech isn't more advanced, it just looks different.
