Skin cancer and sunscreen myth.

A dissident dermatologist

Bernard Ackerman, MD, (deceased 2008) was one of the world’s foremost authorities on the subject of skin cancer and the sun, sunscreens and melanoma skin cancer risks.

Below are Ackerman’s views excerpted from an article in The New York Times (July 20, 2004), titled “I BEG TO DIFFER; A Dermatologist Who’s Not Afraid to Sit on the Beach”:

The link between melanoma and sun exposure (dermatology’s dogma) is unproven. There’s no conclusive evidence that sunburns lead to cancer. There is no real proof that sunscreens protect against melanoma. There’s no proof that increased exposure to the sun increases the risk of melanoma.

A 2000 Swedish study concluded that higher rates of melanoma occurred in those who used sunscreen versus those who did not.

Dogmatic and dissident dermatologists? Seriously? The ability of some people to turn any subject into a triumph of the spirit against an overwhelming oppressive regime is staggering.

Somehow I doubt the evil dermatologists of the Lessilluminati were trying to trample the freedoms of beachgoing and tanning salon patriots. "First they came for my UV bed..." If there's significant evidence to support your view, then people will adjust accordingly (somehow, I doubt this will hold up to scrutiny). But trying to portray it as a righteous struggle against Sunscreen Nazis instead of just concerned doctors and scientists doing what they think is in the best interests of public health makes you look crazy.

Ive been saying this for years based on evidence. There are other factors that weigh more heavily than sunburn or sun bed exposure for skin cancer. If sunscreen is in fact an even bigger factor in melanoma increases over the last few decades people need to know about it. I'm glad to know my position has been supported yet again. I haven't used sunscreen in 20 years.

all i know is, if I don`t slap on sunscreen I go from pasty white to lobster red.

I`m pro sunscreen.

I haven't used sunscreen in 20 years.

And George Burns smoked cigars for eighty years. That doesn't make cigars good for you, it just means there are variances in physiology and how people are affected by it.

Just today the Sunscreen Mafia broke into my house and made me apply an entire bottle of Water Babies while they held me at gunpoint. Won't someone stop this waking nightmare? :(

And the pain is immense. And the fevers. Ever gotten sunburned so badly you got a fever? I have. I don't go out without sunscreen even in the winter.

Also, that website is full of articles about detox, cinnamon cleanses, and essential oils for swollen feet. What a load of crap. I'm not buying it.

What RAMA has done here is taken an issue that has a considerable amount of nuance about it and boiled it down to "daring rogue challenges evil corporate/government orthodoxists."

The long and short of it is that science isn't sure whether sunscreen use prevents skin cancer in the long-term, though most sunscreens are unquestionably effective in preventing sunburns.

Love me some sunshine. I was out all day on Saturday and got a wonderful tan. Haven't used sunscreen in years.

Ive been saying this for years based on evidence. (...) I haven't used sunscreen in 20 years.
That's called an anecdote. And last I checked, the plural of anecdote is not data.

Bad statistics. Go to your room, and say ten Hail Bayes and twenty Gauss Noster.

Ye gods, yes, and it was awful. I'm of the pale Irish complexion, so if I don't wear sunscreen, I'd probably burst into flames. The worst sunburn I ever had kept me bedridden for a week. It was brutal. Never again. I slather on sunscreen if it's sunny, and I know I'm going to be out in it for more than 15 minutes.

Yep. Tripped my bullshit meter right off.

I wear sunscreen every day. I'm not concerned about sunburns, but it helps stave off more hyperpigmentation and hopefully will help my skin age more gracefully in general.

the top comment from that linked 'article':

"women who avoid sunbathing during the summer are twice as likely to die as those who sunbathe every day."

Well, since everyone's chance of dying is 100%, I can't say I find that entirely compelling.

Hair gel, make up, lotions, sun screen, shampoo... I suspect all of it to be potentially dangerous. Who knows which (artificial) ingredient could potentially cause cancer without long term evaluation. But I use it anyways.

Bernie, Bernie, Bernie...tsk. Be honest with us...you just hate sunscreen cause it's icky to put on makes ya sticky and tastes funny.

Like that whole anti vaccination thing...it's really just needle phobia.

I used to tan well when I was eight. Now I just burn. Given this, suntan lotion has many, many uses. Unless it causes cancer, I think it's better to use it than to not use it.

How the heck are you supposed to spend all day in the sun if you burn without it?

Maybe we need to go back to parasols.. nah.
