Hay Fever - Share Your Experience

It's this time of the year again when the sun comes out, the birds chirp and the flowers blossom. But the nice and cosy atmosphere is deceptive as there is an army of pollen hidden in the air, just waiting to attack.

But joking aside, are there any fellow sufferers here who know what constantly sneezing and eye rubbing during the summer means? How do you deal with hay fever?

To eliminate pollen, I brush my hair with a wet hair brush every evening and I wash it every second day. Seems to have no effect at all. At the moment I am quite allergic to almost everything. Yesterday I was outside for just 90 minutes but holy moley, that backfired. I could hardly sleep during the night because my nose was so blocked. My medicine doesn't help at all.

Any advices? Has anybody ever tried an allergen-desensitising treatment? I am seriously considering it for this autumn, so I can enjoy the sun next year.

How do you cope?

Has anybody ever tried an allergen-desensitising treatment?

Yes, several years of allergy shots when I was in my late teens. At the time, I thought they made a big difference. By now, 40+ years later, I realize that my allergies come and go anyway. I've gone as long as five years with virtually no symptoms and then had them come back with a vengeance for a couple years. So who knows how much the shots really helped.

Maybe you need a refreshement every five years?

I've got a doctor's appointment in two weeks to discuss the topic. Hopefully I will remember to ask about this.

My hay fever is always worst in the late summer/fall until we get our first hard freeze, usually in mid-October.
I've tried lots of different things, but I've never heard of allergen-desensitising treatment, it's certainly something to look into.
One year I tried acupuncture, which surprisingly worked, but I had to go every week, and it was expensive over the course of three months. It was kind of fun though, and I got a realy trippy feeling with acupuncture.

My family is going through shots currently, and it's certainly reduced this years effects.

I think it's generally a given that you'll need to go though some update shot cycles in the future after the initial treatment.

I have a lot of environmental allergies so I've done the shots. I stopped when I moved and haven't restarted them. I think they helped slightly but didn't eliminate my allergies, and you really do have to keep up with them.

These days I mostly just stay indoors and avoid allergens where possible since Illinois wants me to die. Living in the city helps, but does not completely do away with the problem. Medication and saline rinses also help a little. The only thing that really does away with my allergies is the winter when everything dies. I'm the only person who is sad when it stops snowing.

OTC medication helps with the allergies, and my doc prescribed FloNase for the allergic rhinitis. Together they work fairly well, but some days are still a bit rough.

Oh, I've had it bad in the past. Fortunately, I think it's something I've grown out of as time passed, and it no longer has as much an effect on me as it once had.

@ Kirby: I had no idea that acupuncture was a treatment form for hay fever. My grandmother once got an acupuncture treatment for her headaches and it seemed to work for some time. But wow, I am impressed that you can treat hay fever with it as well.

But this something I really dislike. I love sitting in the sun and I don't want to be forced to stay inside. Although it's the thing that helps the most.

I really wish that I would grow out of it, but so far that hasn't happened, so I don't have much hope. But it's nice too see that some people get rid of hay fever naturally.

I think we live in the same area, and yes, this is Allergy Hell.

Years ago my doctor prescribed Flonase, and it works very well for the sneezing. Doesn't do much for the eyes though. You can get drops, but they are pretty expensive.

Seasonal allergies? My experience? I want to kill the world, basically.

When I was in New Orleans for work a couple weeks ago there was a joke going around about the allergies being so bad that all the area meth-heads were turning their meth back into Sudafed.

every year like clock work I get terrible allergies from late may to early july.

some sort of grass pollen.

if I sneeze once, I'm screwed for 12 hours.

If I'm lucky and it rains the entire month of June, no problems.

Local unpasteurized honey, my friends. You'll find it at your local farmer's market.

The bees collect the allergens and put them in their sweet, sweet honey. You eat a tablespoon a day, and it is like an allergy shot optimized for the local allergens.

This is from someone who had allergies and asthma growing up, and 8 years of allergy shots. And it really, really works. :techman:

That almost makes me want to have allergies just so that I could try it...

Thanks for the tip. I will definitely try that. I have seen beehives nearby. Now I only have to track down their owner.

I had hayfever as a kid. It pretty much wrecked my childhood summers. I remember family holidays in the country when I could barely breathe or see. Really horrid. I am so pleased that I have grown out of it. These days I suffer from hayfever about a day every 3 or 4 years. I am so lucky.

When I was younger I took medication, which did next to nothing, and used nasal sprays, which helped somewhat. Since my early 20s or so it's been barely noticeable, although my mouth feels tingly and becomes slightly inflamed if I drink chamomile tea or eat or drink something with papayas in it. The only severe allergy I still have is to cat hair, and that's less severe than it used to be. If I go somewhere where there is a cat, Clairitin-D usually keeps it in check pretty well, although it isn't 100%.
