I believe the real-life reason was because they needed to give Seven of Nine a big role and her own "area" other than the cargo bay. Forget where I read and/or heard that, but I believe Kate mentioned it in an interview that they built Astrometrics FOR Seven. Which I have no complaint about, I thought it was awesome. Who wants to be stuck in the cargo bay all day. And you knowwww Seven would not want to take orders from B'Elanna in Engineering (even though Seven's head probably comprises all of the knowledge of the entire engineering crew...). But yeah it seems as though science/engineering/astrophysics were her strong suits and Astrometrics kind of emcompasses all of those skills in one.

    Aeroponics was just for Kes.

    No Kes, no Aeroponics.

    They had a spare set.

Why not give it to Seven?

Well, present-day technology is sufficient to detect an individual planet around a star about 21,000 light-years away (the ``super-earth'' OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb), and there's a spectroscopic analysis of what may be a single star, known by the catchy name SDSS J122952.66+112227.8, in the Virgo galaxy cluster something on the order of 55 million light-years way. Obviously that's an extreme case, but, I should expect Voyager to be pretty well able to detect ``celebrity'' stars --- ones with some particularly attractive-to-study feature --- just about wherever the ship is in the Milky Way.

You can't workout that you are 70,000 light years from home, unless you know where you are, and where your home is.

This makes a lot of sense. With many more resources to draw on and being able to avoid absolutely having to burnish her politesse (at least until the latter stages) by being stationed on the bridge or engineering, Seven had the ideal work environment to parallel her home hangout. Not to say that she was left to be solitary on her own personal island there, but I think one can say that Astrometrics gave her the true opportunity to be a "MASTER OF HER DOMAIN" :techman:

She's been sealed off form plants virtually her whole life. I'm sure her thumbs are borg silver.

Like I said, her place should have been to the left of Janeway. It's labelled Ops.

    You can't assimilate plants

And Bad Thoughts, "left of Janeway", YES.

    Why can't they assimilate plants?

"budding" makes me think that he's a plant.

    But he has wings!

    (Flying plants?)

Yet "Hatching" seems off kilter with flora.

Maybe the humans use the word "hatching" because they need a word they associate with birth.

Point is, if there are unilaterally unassimilatabe species (like the the Kazon?), a handful of these "unclean" would make fantastic pointmen/diplomats to bargain a treaty with the Borg on the Federations behalf.

I have maintained (because I'm a dick who will not see reason.) that the Borg are a Peace Corps bringing civilization to the boon docks of the Galaxy. Nothing evil, and nothing malicious. It's just sometimes the Christian Missionaries have to march into the little African villages, lock the adults in cages and hold all the children down while polio vaccinations are forced on them (More of a yesterday scenario than a today scenario.).

But the Borg are not going to fire on a ship that is staffed by beings they will not assimilate who are not taking an aggressive stance against them... Which is why Janeway should have signed up the Kazon, or handed the Federation over to the Kazon (in name) so that as the Cubes met the new borders of Kazon space in the Alpha Quadrant, the Borg should say "HELL NO!"

Although the Borg physically couldn't assimilate 8472, they were too single minded of purpose to stop trying even though it was impossible. At what point do their rules engagement change? Could they reaccess the Kazon and try assimilating them again some day or are the Kazon forever tainted?

Re: Things you can do from Astrometrics -but not from bridge/engineeri

And why are they unassimilatable? We needed to know. I mean sure they are kind of stupid but the Borg assimilate plenty of other stupid people. I would have thought they could use them just to hold stuff up, as door jambs etc..

And is Seska's baby safe or has his superior Cardassian DNA made him vulnerable?

MAYBE the Kazon just break down real quick, brain function ceases, bodies fall apart and turn to jelly.. maybe they take way too much maintenance to even be door jambs.

So they were laughing at Kes for only living for 9 years, because they lived for 11?

No they live don't live to 11.. they are just perhaps POROUS?! Maybe they are the tree people and that isn't mud, but bark in their hair. And they rapidly deteriorate when assimilated and are not worth it.

So you're saying the Borg have rejected them because of fashion?

    How shallow.

Hey you know the Kazon hair looks similar to the tree people hair in Who.

I always thought the Kazon were unassimilated because they were unexceptional. Their technology was derived from another race but they never improved on it. Their intelligence certainly seems sub-par.

I'm going with trees. Plant material. They don't graft well so assimilation ruins them.

If the Borg met 90 foot tall sentient dinosaurs... Imagine how much bigger their cubes would have to be to cart those monsters around?

Do you think that the Borg would have difficulty assimilating silicone based lifeforms like the Horta?
