Letterman calls it quits.

Honestly, CBS should give The Late Show to Ellen DeGeneres.

Couldn't a Conan replacement effort be storyboarded from the beginning to limit the number of guests and give greater priority to skits, remotes, extemporaneous riffs, etc. that are his strength? Might such a change in the standard format, regardless of the personality hosting it, that we have become innured to being the 11:30 entertainment template for so long have a reasonable chance of acceptance?

I wouldn't want to see him have such an opportunity shortcircuited by virtue of his having to be straighjacketed into a role that doesn't allow his real talents to be genuinely loosed. :)

I predicted a while back that after Jay Leno was off the Tonight Show for good, Letterman would feel free to retire. When Johnny Carson retired, Dave stated that he hoped his career might be as long as Carson's. He passed Carson's 30 years on late night talk, and also managed to outlast Leno.

Now, will there be a public reconciliation with Leno? I think there might very well be.

Was he really so at-odds with Leno, or was he pissed that NBC passed him over for Leno?

Letterman was Carson's choice for his replacement. Leno (and, to be fair, his agent) did a lot of back-channel politicking to bone Letterman in Leno's favor. The air had cleared a bit during the interim, but Letterman was incredibly pissed when Leno executed his putsch in 2010 to re-take The Tonight Show.

That being said, Letterman did offer a "good night, Jay" on the night of Leno's final show.

I think --I hope -- that Conan is happy where he is. The setting and the time slot seem to work for him, and TBS would be foolish to let him get away.

How about Drew Carey?
Drew did a good job on the Late Late Show on April 1st.

Really? Did I watch the same show? I thought he was horrible at interviewing and the monolog was just too scripted.

He's also very bad as a host of Price is Right, just doesn't have the energy.

I have always longed Lauren Graham and think she would do great in a talk show host setting.

Yes, we did.

^ I liked Drew as well, it was a different vibe than Craig but good nonetheless. In fact, I think he did better than Craig did doing The Price is Right which made me appreciate just how much is going on in that show (six games, two wheels, the showcase, etc.). Craig got through but was a bit awkward. Still I had to see Geoff and Secretariat.

Makes sense, Leno gone, Carson's tenure matched, all the young bucks coming into late night, not a bad time to go out. Dave's been there for me through school and college and most of my life, enjoyed many a moment watching him through the years.

This would be inspired. CBS should think outside the box and start looking at comedians we wouldn't expect. Ellen DeGeneres, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler... heck, I'd love to see Louis C.K. host the show but that will probably never happen.

Even though I love Conan O'Brien, it would seem weird for him to jump ship after making such a big deal when he moved to TBS. His contract does expire in 2015 and I would love to see Conan take over for Letterman (the irony alone would be worth it) but it seems like Conan is comfortable where he is. Although I'm sure he'd want to take over Letterman. Whether or not he will is another story.

It's been years since I watched him, but I enjoyed his Ventriloquy weeks. Sometimes I would watch TV after the news just to hear "And now, from New York, the grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreatest city in the world, it's THE LATE SHOW!".

Why don't they just cancel the show? Is there a rule that the time slot has to be filled with what is basically some comedy and chit chat with celebrities? They'd probably get better ratings with How I met your mother repeats, at least that's something different for people who aren't interested in chosing between one of very similar late night shows. They could do a mix of comedy and drama repeats, would cost much less than producing a late night show with an overpaid host and have the same or even better ratings.

The big question is, who will CBS get to replace him. One of the chief candidates, IMO, should be Vince Vaughn. He hosted Dave's show one night when Dave was off after his heart surgery. Vince killed. Some of the reviews said he reminded them of the first time Burt Reynolds subbed for Johnny. He was like early Letterman, needling the guests, Paul, and generally being a fly in the ointment. His monologue was great, which really surprised me.

If CBS is smart, they'll pull out all stops to get VV.
If this stops Vince Vaughn from making any more movies, I'm all for it.

I loved Late Night, and rarely missed it when I was in High School and College, but when he switched to CBS and was on an hour earlier, they started taking less risks, which was the beginning of the end for me with Letterman. I think moving Ferguson an hour earlier would stifle his genius as well. He should stay where he is.

Daniel Tosh of Comedy Central's Tosh.0.

At some point, someone is going to lure him away from Comedy Central.

I was thinking along the same lines. Craig makes the most of his late night time slot and slight budget to create a great spontaneous and laid back vibe that I'm not sure could be maintained at 11:30. I wouldn't want to deny him the opportunity to move up the ladder I'm not sure the results would be so good.
