Worf-Selar Romance

Ro_Laren

Commodore
Commodore
I read something interesting on Memory Alpha today:

Tracy Tormé wanted to develop a romance between Selar and Worf, but he was forced to drop the idea when the character of K'Ehleyr (also played by Plakson) was developed for "The Emissary".
Has anyone ever heard this before? It would have been interesting to see how the writers would have developed this relationship.

Well, Worf was already stoical as a Vulcan...but I hardly see him doing the finger thing as Sarek and Amanda were always doing in Journey to Babel. Selar tends her fingers and Worf bites it.

Based on the way that Selar's character developed in the "New Frontier" novel series, I could totally see her being involved with Worf.

Kinda makes me wish Selar had become the new CMO from S2 onwards--it would have been an interesting romance to see develop.

I have heard this before, many years ago, now. Seen odd then, seems odd now. Just can't see it myself!

I like Selar. I don't know how well a romance with Worf would've worked, but a recurrence of her character would've been wonderful

Would've been a nifty opposites-attract thing and seeing more of Selar would have been welcome. But losing the exploration of different interpretations of Klingon-ness we got with K'Ehleyr -- not to mention the sheer fire and vividness of her character -- would be too high a price to pay.

Did this inspire the aborted Worf-T'Lana romance in the TNG relaunch? Either way, Worf and Selar would have been a great relationship. Probably better than the short-lived worf-K'Ehleyr romance or the Selar-Burgoyne romance. I hated the latter.

Michael Dorn himself talked about this way back in early 1989 - in the pages of the Offical Starlog TNG magazine.. issue #7 I think. He said that the writers had told him they were developing the relationship between him and Selar - obviously never panned out!

I suppose the author was well-aware that Selar had been created as potential love-interest for Worf and then considered that for her development.

I like Crusher, but I think that Selar would have been an interesting CMO in Season 2 (instead of Pulaski). I definitely wish that they would have had Selar in more episodes, whether or not she was Worf's love interest:

/\ Selar as CMO would have been a great idea. I would love to see a few episodes of that. Great idea!

I can't remember where I saw this, but I remember reading that one of the writer/production staff wanted to replace Crucher with an alien doctor, but was over ruled by Roddenberry, as he wanted Diane Muldar to take the role. Selar was added as a concession.

But since she proved to be far more interesting and enjoyable to watch in one episode, compared to Pulaski's (almost) full season, does make me wonder what would've happened had she been green lit from the start. A Worf romance would've been great to see develop, not to mention her giving Data an alternative POV on his quest to be more human.

But then again, I like well-played Vulcans, so I'm a little bias :)

You know, if Selar had been CMO instead of Pulaski then people might have liked it so much that TPTB wouldn't have brought back Dr. Crusher. I wonder how that would have changed TNG.

Picard might've gotten another long-term flame who actually put out, lol.

This thread and the one about Susan Gibney, and the one about Tasha being hated gets me thinking about what the Enterprise would have looked like with Selar as CMO long term, Susan Gibney as Troi and Denise Crosby sticking with TNG and developing Yar long term. Interesting stuff.

^ Yes Willsbabe, provided they didn't castrate the male characters à la Voyager!

I enjoyed Diana Muldaur - she was also stellar in TOS. I also might have enjoyed Plakson, if only to avoid the show trying to replicate TOS's Big Trio formula and strike out on its own.

In time Plakson would have imbued Selar with her signature arrogance, sorry confidence, but without the emotional posturing that characterized her Klingon and Q characters. Selar as CMO would have made good Trek - with a Worf romance, and also dealing with aliens - though I don't really see the Picard foil stuff that Muldaur was perfect for.

It would have been intriguing to see Selar with a prejudice against Data, though - at once dismissing his "humanity" or even sentience - while at the same time, coveting his capabilities. That might have made for an intriguing friendship arc....

Also, Plakson's hawt.
