Tell Us Something You Learned This Week

This week I learned two interesting facts:

1. The difference between all natural cane sugar and high fructose corn syrup: the former is 50% fructose, 50% glucose, the latter is 55% fructose, 45% glucose. That's it, 5%. There is no difference in impact on human health.

2. As cow meat is beef and sheep meet is mutton, human meet is longham. (Oh the penis jokes that one could make!)

What did you learn this week? Let's discuss our findings!

I learned about the history of educators using Second Life as a virtual library platform.

I also learned the difference between Google Drive and Google Docs.

I'm learning right now while I'm watching BBC 1 that organic remains have been discovered on Dartmoor. What's amazing is that they're 4000 years old. Most prehistoric cremations on Dartmoor had been robbed out centuries ago, but this intact cremation with its grave goods includes wooden ear studs, two hundred beads (previously a total of eight beads had been found on the moor), and even an almost intact fur pelt. An amazing treasure trove. Oh, and the earliest bit of tin ever found in the area as well.

Love archaeology!

What is the difference?

I learned from a former student now in the navy submarine service, speaking to my high school students: any one of our ballistic missile submarines is the third most powerful nuclear power on earth.

Today, I learned a saying attributed to Buddha, which I thought was interesting enough to look up, upon which I learned that it is probably a fake Buddha quote. That rebuttal is dated August 15, 2012, but the quote, with or without attribution to the Buddha, has been making the rounds online at least since January 6, 2010.

“If you propose to speak, always ask yourself, is it true, is it necessary, is it kind?” — Fake Buddha Quote

So, I'm a little late to that party, but I think the ideas behind the quote have merit, and I thought I would try to apply it more consciously. I think I'm usually pretty good about getting two out of three, but not all three. I'm even better at getting one out of three!

This week--right now, in fact!--I learned that there are people working at the library who do not know how to use a phone-based PA system correctly.

This weekend, I hope to learn about how to truly treasure the value of one’s weekends.

It reminds me of the Quaker practice of Speaking from Silence.

I learned that Donna Noble returns as the Doctor's companion, and that Peter Capaldi played another role in the series before becoming the Doctor. I'm sure that knowledge will get me far in life.

The human nose can detect hydrogen sulfide gas at 10 ppm but not at 300 ppm, as the nose becomes paralyzed at that concentration.

Penguins can refrigerate their stomachs, which halts digestion, and ensures that their offspring get a meal.

The way you chew your food is unique, like a fingerprint.

I learned water refracts sound as well as light, which is why the sound of traffic gets louder with heavier rainfall.

I can't find any reference to this? Longpig is well known but never come across Longham?

I learned that in 2014 people can get upset about a commercial where people sing a patriotic song in different languages.

I learned how much life really does work against me.

Huge pineapple shortage in Asia right now, prices are skyrocketing mostly due to weather and Dole buying up a ton of raw material.

Price of tuna has bottomed out to $1300 per Metric Ton, down from a record $2400 per MT just a few months ago. Good supply and no one has been buying.
