80's music

No Rest for the Wicked is the only Helix album I own or have ever heard. The guy on the cover has always reminded me of RDJ.

I loved hair metal when I was a kid. Hell, I still love it: Dokken, Great White, Poison, Skid Row, Ratt ... all mainstays on my iPod.

There were also the one-hit-wonder hair bands:

And classic rock bands trying to reinvent themselves as hair bands:

Psychedelic Furs

80s music, esp. tracks with a prominent synth/electronic component, can awesome. If I had to pick a single track - and video - to represent 80s pop, I'd probably choose this:

Neon wetsuits, dolphins and colourful bows on little black dresses...

A long while back I posted tons of favourite 80s songs in an older thread. On top of all that, I was reminded of this recently:

(Yes, they did borrow the theme from the finale of Sibelius's 5th symphony. ;))

Reminds me of Winona Ryder. And she has a Trek connection. She played a communications officer in Star Trek IV.

There are not a lot of bands that started and finished in the 80s that I like, although many of my favourite bands and artists recorded through the 80s and beyond.

As far as the "80s Sound" goes, one of my favourite tracks is also one of the earliest examples of that synth pop sound, it is called Same Old Scene by Roxy Music.

Dire Straits, "So Far Away"

Foreigner, "I Want to Know What Love Is"

Power Station, "Some Like it Hot"

Fracking love '80s music. I even found something to like by some artists in genres I'm otherwise not that interested in. These are just my favorites that I can think of right now:

  • Michael Jackson, "Thriller" (and the entire album)
  • Prince, "1999," "When Doves Cry," "I Would Die 4 U," "Purple Rain"
  • The Fixx, "One Thing Leads To Another"
  • Tears For Fears, "Shout"
  • Level 42, "Something About You"
  • Dolly Parton, "9 to 5"
  • Billy Joel, "Uptown Girl"
  • Duran Duran, "Rio," "Save A Prayer," "The Reflex," "Union of the Snake," "New Moon On Monday," "Wild Boys."
  • U2, "With Or Without You," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," "Where The Streets Have No Name"
  • The Police, "Every Breath You Take," "King of Pain," "Wrapped Around Your Finger," "Synchronicity II"
  • Big Country, "In A Big Country"
  • Peter Schilling, "Major Tom (Coming Home)"
  • Men At Work, "Down Under," "Who Could It Be Now?" "It's A Mistake"
  • Olivia Newton-John, "Physical," "Make A Move On Me"
  • Culture Club (too many to list)
  • Frankie Goes To Hollywood, "Relax"
  • Melissa Manchester, "You Should Hear How She Talks About You"
  • Air Supply, "The One That I Love"
  • Kool & The Gang, "Celebration"
  • Pat Benatar, "Shadows Of The Night"
  • The Commodores, "Nightshift"
  • Journey, "Send Her My Love"
  • Howard Jones, "What Is Love?"
  • Joey Scarbury, "Believe It Or Not" (theme to The Greatest American Hero TV series)

One of the more under appreciated bands of the 80s:

Another:

Here's a group most never heard of, but probably have heard the song anyway:

And because Nancy Wilson is pretty much perfect:

80's Music has it's own special brand of Awesome.
