Except when they make occasional references to stuff that came before it. But the way Doctor Who is structured, is that the show reinvents itself with each new Doctor or the arrival of a new companion anyway.
Which is generally the way Doctor Who has always worked since 1963. The majority of Whovians never saw the program from the very beginning, but joined it much later on and then became interested in finding out more about the Doctor and his world.

I definitely want a show back in the prime timeline. I would love to see the aftermath of Romulus being destroyed and what happened to the empire. I see where a propose independent pilot called "star trek renegades" is being made by Tim Russ. It looks promising. I think its ok for the Abrams movies to be set in an alternate reality but I want my trek on TV to be in the universe we all know and love.

"Renegades" is brought to us by the same people who brought us "Of Gods and Men" -- which seemed to have a potentially good story, but which exhibited the problem that Star Trek, particularly with the TOS and TNG cast, had toward the end -- it wasn't a show about Starfleet officers doing Starfleety things .. it was about actors getting to play their Star Trek characters again. When I watched "Of Gods and Men", I didn't feel like I was watching Uhura, Chekov, and Tuvok; I felt like I was watching Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, and Tim Russ have fun at a cast reunion filming a fan script.

No offense against the folks who put together "Of Gods and Men" or "Renegades", but if that's the "future of Trek", I'll stick with Pocket Books -- I don't care who's "acting" in it.

I really loved "Of Gods and Men" - it wasn't a classic by any means, but loved seeing Uhura, Chekov, Harriman and Tuvok again playing their roles. It's pure fanwank, but that's the point. It'll probably always be my favourite live-action Trek fanfic.

"Renegades" looks like it could be fun too, although I suspect it'll be Trek's answer to Babylon 5's "Legend of the Rangers" (especially in being a pilot for a series that will never be - I'd rather have Tuvok, Chekov and Doc Zimmerman lead the way rather than the Renegade crew)

Actual Trek actors or no, they're still fan fiction and I too consider the novels to be the true, authorized continuation of Trek Prime.

You know what is cool about the new timeline. It automatically makes every Vulcan we ever see a tragic angst filled figure.

Replaying Mass Effect, I'd rather see someone attempt to bring it to TV rather than go to the Trek well again.

I'm eighteen so, although I'd watched almost everything else in re-run format and, of course, loved it, I was really looking forward to the reboot.

I watched it and... loved it. Then, because it got me to go back and start re-watching the older series, I ended up hating it within a matter of months.

I loved the characters, themes, races and history of TNG-DS9-VOY and all those years of exploration and adventure, character development, progression and relationships were, according to the new films, dead and gone.

They existed only in the same sense that all the other alternate-timelines/realities that the series' visited did; never to be seen again.

I refused to watch STID but, from what I've read, it does nothing to further its own story and, instead, rips off older (and better) stories.

So, yes, I want the Prime timeline back; I want to know what happened after the Dominion War, whether or not the Cardassians have rebuilt themselves, how Voyager's discoveries have affected Starfleet's conduct... etcetera.

I'm invested in the Prime timeline in the same I could come to be invested in the New timeline (if it actually cared to go somewhere).

All your questions are answered in the ongoing novels. If you want to know what happens to Picard, Janeway, Sisko, the Cardassians and the rest after their series' ended, get reading.

(and you might want to try watching Into Darkness before slamming it as "going nowhere" based on someone else's opinion)

I'd much prefer something with more authority and vision. Whilst I do enjoy the novels (I'm currently reading the Typhon Pact series), they aren't the same as the shows.

Star Trek makes good television and I'd like more of that.

That isn't necessary. Being told what happens and concluding that it's going nowhere is not the same as being given "someone else's opinion" and doing so.

If the second reboot film was a retread/remake/reboot/rip-off of the second original film then why should I have faith that it's going anywhere?

How do you define "authority and vision"? The Trek novelverse has outlived any of the series', with it's roots going all the way back to the first New Frontier novel in 1997 (and coming into it's own with the DS9 relaunch in 2001). It seems to me as if there's a long-term plan in place for the Trek universe. Destiny and The Eternal Tide are some of Trek's finest adventures, regardless of the medium.
That's fair enough. I suggest the fan film Star Trek Renegades, featuring several former Voyager castmembers as the closest thing to that upcoming.
One can negatively summarize the events of any film or episode. In '82 and '83 some fans were calling Wrath of Khan a shallow Star Wars rip-off rife with continuity errors. The prevailing opinion today is somewhat more positive. Ditto TNG upon it's launch in '87. If you listened to the negative reviews or read summaries without context back then ("..and then Sisko prayed to the wormhole aliens and the invading fleet vanished") you wouldn't be here on TrekBBS now. How is Into Darkness any different? There are a lot of positive reviews to accompany those negative ones.

The medium, I think, matters in terms of feeling. I don't feel the same way watching a show as reading a book, naturally.

Star Trek was often more about the visuals, especially as my childhood hammered the colour-coding thing into my head (Captain Scarlet/Power Rangers/etcetera) and gave me appreciation for it in Star Trek.

I enjoyed seeing the alien design; I can't get that from a book no matter how descriptive they get. For example, 'Brinkmanship' (the one I'm reading now) tries its best to describe the Tzenkathi but I still only have a very vague sense of what they look like.

That may be shallow, however, and it is certainly subjective, but this thread is about what we want rather than want. Well, that's an example of what I want. I would've, for example, simply a televisual version of some of the novels (in a Netflix mini-series, perhaps).

I'll have to give it a look. I did like Star Trek Continues, if it's anything like that.

It might be better if I linked to just exactly where most of my impression has come from. Here.

"No text can withstand a negative reading"
Imagine you read THIS before you ever saw any Star Trek.:ack:

Just as an example of an alternate viewpoint, what some saw as a "rip off" death scene I saw as a fantastic alternate reality version of an event (something Trek has done a few times before, albeit of less iconic moments) and Kirk and Spock's reactions choke me up every time I see it. It's not the end of a long friendship as in WoK, it's Spock's realization of Kirk's affection and loyalty to him and his realization that he can't simply choose not to feel when something terrible happens. It's Kirk making the ultimate sacrifice for his crew (and even more mind bogglingly, facing death as Kirk Prime never did)

Long story shot, give it a try. You may hate it with a passion like the review you linked to and consider it sacrilege... or you might have a enjoyable 2 hours. You say yourself you loved ST'09 until you considered the ramifications of Trek's reboot.

To end on a brighter note, here's the new teaser trailer for Renegades. See how many former Trek actors your can spot (and I recommend Of Gods and Men too, also available on youtube)

    Wut? :vulcan:

Considering that Original Kirk DIED in the Generations movie, I would definitely say that he faced death.

Kirk faced death a few times in the show, like in "The Tholian Web". I'm sure he didn't know he'd be ok.

I meant by the timeframe of WoK, about 15 years ahead of Kirk's death in ID... although as bbjeg pointed out quite rightly, WoK does contradict the series in claiming that Kirk never faced death. I withdraw that comment.
