Hey, I liked Transformers. The only bad parts were a result of Steven Spielberg insisting on the "boy and his car" coming of age story. If they'd cut those parts out, made Josh Duhamel's character the lead, figured out a way to get Optimus Prime in the movie sooner, and tied in the hackers better, it would've been a great movie.

I like JMS, but I really didn't think much of his proposal for Trek TV reboot.

Tihihi, so basically change the entire film and it would be good.

The curious thing is, in a roundabout way, what he wanted for Star Trek came true with the current movies, minus the intended story arc; change everything back to the original characters, ship, and setting, get rid of the holodeck, make the Enterprise smaller, etc.

Compared to the Starfleet ships seen in the shows set in the 24th Century (TNG, DS9, VOY), obviously.

Umm, no. The Abrams Enterprise is 700+ metres long (according to those who are responsible for making the movie). That's bigger than any TNG version. Sorry. So again, smaller than what?

JMS' 2002 proposal didn't say anything about the Enterprise's size. Only that they keep the silhouette but modernize the technology inside and out.

His reboot was a complete break with the old (no wibbly wobbly timey wimey or parallel universes) and reimagining from the ground up, so the size of 24th century ships in TNG and DS9 would matter even less than they do to those behind the current movies and their supersized Enterprise.

I criticized STID for not following up on the Romulans since everything that Marcus is doing is the result of Nero destroying Vulcan (The ship is named VENGEANCE for crying out loud). He argued that it was meant to reflect what Bush did when he went after Iraq when they had nothing to do with 9/11, which I counter argued that we went into Afghanistan first. His follow up to that was to tell me to get off of crack. And Bob is now out there preaching about how Ender's Game is about tolerance. Go figure.

That's exactly what I want. Bring back the real SF writers, and I'll be in Trek heaven. :)

It's not like Star Trek really had them before. You'll live.

There's no guarantee that they'll want to write a Star Trek movie (in fact, one professional writer loves STID to bits.)

They had to bring in Spike (Sam) Witwicky somehow, so that's what they did. I had no problem with that, unlike most-it brought a human dimension to the movie, just as having Spike in the show did the same thing.

Whoever the the writer is, he/she has to have demonstrated the ability to write stories in a way that is relevent in a big budget 201x silver screen context, not some mid-1990's TV show.

^Does the needed skillset differ that much? STID's structure reminds me of a 4-act tv episode, maybe it's that when some say it felt like an TOS episode.

TOS was not a mid 90's TV show now was it??

The Original Series focused on adventure packed into 1 hour episodes, where as the 90's Berman formula was to self-indulge in half -baked characterisations and predictable outcomes to their story telling (i.e frequent technobabble far exceeding TOS)

It is insulting to modern audiences to suggest any kind of storywriting and characterisation from DS9/VOY/ENT to make it on the big screen, people expect entertainment and satisfaction from 2 hours not 10 years of TV.

    ^THIS.

Time for the obdurate foundamentalist Trek fans among us to stop wishing for the older shows to come back (as much as I loved TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT); it isn't coming back, and people like Orci & Kurtzman are the only ones who would write movie that this that are successful.

Aside from Harlan Ellison, David Gerrold, Robert Bloch, Richard Matheson, Theodore Sturgeon, Fredric Brown, Norman Spinrad, Jeremy Bixby, Larry Niven, Diane Duane, Peter Beagle... just off the top of my head.

EDIT: How could I forget Alan Dean Foster?

But what makes them "real SF writers"?
