I remember years ago, before they cast Voldemort for Harry Potter, John Malkovich was heavily tipped to play him. Then JK Rowling came forward and said absolutely not, British actors only, please.

They are very protective of some of these roles, but we don't care if they play our Presidents or famous Americans. (Anthony Hopkins, Stephen Dillane, Daniel Day Lewis, Rufus Sewell, Tom Wilkinson, in addition to them playing Superman, Spider-Man, Batman...). I guess Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes broke the trend as you say.

Yeah, as I said, Americans may just be more open minded about that kind of thing. I could only speculate as to the possible psychological or cultural reasons behind it, but it doesn't really matter either way . Just for kicks, I think Jeff Goldblum would make a fun Doctor .

How awesome would it be to have Peter Dinklage as the Doctor?

Isn't he American though? The British fanbase would kick up a huge shitstorm if he was cast.

Some Americans protested at Batman, Spider-Man and Superman all being played by Brits, but people got over it, and now no-one cares. All that matters is the talent and dedication of the actor, and not where he is from .

More importantly, his 'westerosi' accent is far from convincing (and at times distractingly awful).

I agree the part should go to whoever is best for it, but I absolutely believe that if an American was cast as The Doctor or James Bond for that matter, Brits would go apeshit. You absolutely wouldn't hear the end of it, from the tabloids on down, if Moffat and Co. announced tomorrow that the actor was chosen and it happened to be an American. The gnashing of teeth would be epic. There are already some Bristish fans saying that DW is trying too hard to cater to the American market as it is. An American doctor with a British accent would blow their minds. The apocalypse would be nigh.

For my part, I think the actor cast should be British but if I was in charge of it, I would cast my net as far as possible. The thing about British TV and film is that the acting pool is rather small, which is why ITV and BBC dramas have the same actors over and over. There's really nothing wrong with finding an American no-name actor who can do a flawless British accent if he happens to be a better fit than these other guys.

The acting pool isn't small at all - British producers being conservative about lead actors is more the issue with the same faces popping up again. We sustain a huge theatre sector as one as one of the strongest domestic TV markets in the world.

Anyway casting British actors as Spiderman and the like isn't quite the same as they are still playing American characters in American settings, it's still essentially an American story which isn't the case with Who. Plus the BBC is under different pressures compared to commercial organisations so it will never happen.

Well I don't read the books (and only just started watching S3) so I have no idea how long Tyrion will be around for (and I don't want to know ). I don't think they'd cast him anyway for B7, I just hope they cast someone like him.

Lazenby is Austrailian and Brosnan is Irish so an American Bond isn't that much of a stretch. Hell I used to want Desnisof to be the next Bond after Brosnan.

While I think your opinion would be in the minority amongst your countrymen, I agree and I think if someone other than British was cast, a British accent is a must. We don't want another Kevin Costner American Robin Hood on our hands. (though I have a soft spot for that movie....one of my absolute favorites from my childhood).

No joke here but Paul Reubens is a very good actor but unfortunately he will always be seen as Pee-Wee Herman and little else. Sometimes for better or for worse a role will stick to actor no matter how hard they try to run from it.
