Does anybody here own any loud howlers? Beagles are the perfect dog in so many respects but if I had to pick one trait that I wish were different it's their hound howl. My dog is as sweet as can be and probably wouldn't hurt another living creature unless she felt genuinely threatened, but man when there's a noise outside at 4:00 in the morning she'll let loose with yips and howls that can pierce the ears of the dead.
I recently had a possum or alley cat in my yard making some rustling noises and she let out a howl that actually scared me. I suppose if there's a bright side to the whole thing she'd make the devil's noise and wake up the entire town if anybody ever tried to break in in the middle of the night.

My Beagle doesn't howl as much as he used to, but yes, he can be loud. However, the cat is more vocal these days
My dog hardly barks, and never howls. However, my niece's fiance has a gorgeous little beagle named Sammy, and he howls and whines all the time (Sammy, not the fiance). I've only met Sammy a few times, but I've never heard him bark, and my niece told me he doesn't really, as even his barks turn into whines and howls. Sammy's cute as the dickens, and he's the smallest beagle I've ever seen.

Oh goodness, seeing a happy doggy (whether 15 lbs or 115 lbs) tongue sticking out, tail wagging, and running toward you, that's the greatest sight. I'd get strange looks because I'd get right down on the ground with the dog(s).
Oh, so do I, but Marley has unintentionally scared the hell out of several people over the years. What really makes us laugh is when we're walking him on the lead/leash and people with smaller dogs cross the road to avoid us. Marley's afraid of our cats, for crying out loud, and is submissive to practically every dog he's ever met, no matter what size. The thought that anyone thinks he's vicious is hilarious.
I don't care about strangle looks. I mean....come on. Look who we're talking about. Seriously.
I regularly roll on the carpet with my beagle and tickle and scratch her. She loves all sorts of play and can get whipped up into a bit of a frenzy when she wants. It also helps that my remaining cat will take the time to give her some attention (including whacks on the nose) so when she's home alone with the cat she has another living creature to play and have a good time with.
My dignity regarding playing with pets came to a screeching halt when I was about, oh, eleven.

It takes me 20 seconds at maximum to get any strange dog to play with me. Only my parents' current dog doesn't. I have a suspicion that the previous owner tried too hard to train him. He's a good dog, eager to please and intelligent, but he is sensitive and needs a firm but very light hand. Interestingly, I rank with him even above my dad and he begins to play with me now. Very careful but nevertheless. It's a start
He's no howler at all (he tries to comfort me when I howl for fun) but he's rather a barker. One of the sort that barks first and only afterwards takes a closer look. And he loves to scare the postman:
we have a thick hedge around the garden and the letter box is installed in a brick pillar next to the garden gate. When the dog hears the postman come, he sneaks up to the pillar, taking cover behind the hedge, and the moment the postman pushes the mail into the letter box (with outstretched arms at as big a distance as possible), the dog jumps up behind the gate and delivers quite a show.
More than once our poor mail has ended up flying through the air instead of being dropped into the box
I pity the guy but on the other hand seeing him run through a cloud of falling envelopes is so irresistably funny...

This was the best friend an insecure, shy teen who enjoyed SciFi/fantasy could have ever wished for. He was half puli and all personality! I was a big fan of the original BSG, so I named him Muffy (I'm so very sorry buddy!) This pic was taken in the late 80's/early 90's, and it makes me smile every time I see it!

I love this story. It's something I can't do with my cat. I mean, he'll just stalk me and then jump at me and I scream and scare both of us. My sister plays hide and seek with her dog and I think it's the cutest thing ever.
we always play it the other way round: the dog drops his ball somewhere and being such an excitable chap he almost immediately forgets where he left it. Then he's unhappy and all the family swarms out to search for the ball.
But in his defense I must say that he really has no good nose, contrary to his mother. She was a retired police/tracking dog and was very eager to continue what she had done all her life, so my dad trained her to find mushrooms. No truffles (they are a protected species here) but lots of yummy ceps and chanterelles =)
Pasha tried it, too, but all he found was an adder that bit him in the nose. He was quite ill for 2 weeks. Afaik the only case ever of a dog being bitten by a snake in my area. He didn't quite get it, though, and believes that he got stung by a bumble-bee or wasp. So ever since he got bitten, he's been hunting every flying insect, be it a wasp or a ladybug. You can drive him insane by imitating a bee's hum

Muffy had a fun game of tag worked out with the neighbour's cat. Spooky a sleek black cat who seemed to own a key to our house (he always found a way inside...ghost-like). He was was raised with Muffy's litter mate so he had no fear of dogs.
Spooky would stalk Muffy, then leap on his back for a short joy ride. Then he would jump off and Muffy would chase him. The chase would last until physical contact was made. Then the cat would chase the dog until physical contact was made. It was highly entertaining to watch the 8 lb. cat chase the 35lb. dog! Yhis would continue until they collapsed together in an exhausted heap.
Dogs and cats certainly keep life fun!

I'm adopting another dog (a lab mix) later today and I'm really excited. She's gonna need some work (she came from a bad situation), but I just know there's a great dog in there waiting to come out.
My dog Azul will be thrilled to have a playmate. She always loves puppy playdates and now she'll have a permanent buddy. Here's my Azul doing what she loves:

This is my Emma, just a few moments ago, being tolerant of my nieces' idea to tuck her in.

Shandee, I'd love to meet your dog (and the cat) I wish ours could be only remotely like yours. He hates cats passionately. And he considers all dogs except for Shepherds and Huskies a brand of cat.
