Firefly first-time/rewatch (NO SPOILERS, please)

Simon should have 'idiot' tattooed on forehead.

Dweeb son's bad dad is classic Trek guest star. Remember him from ENT (Admiral Black in MUverse?), VOY (that weird S7 medical episode) and early DS9.

I think Simon is a bit worried about getting oil on his special parts. Still a class issue going on.

Oh I will look up the actor. These older admiral types tend to blur in my mind.

I think it is a class issue for both of them, actually. Kaylee totally has an inferiority complex when it comes to Simon's class. And neither one of them gets the other one. . . In The Train Job when Simon asks Kaylee what they are doing, and she describes the crime and says "easy as lying," he looks at her like she's an alien, because lying does not come easy for him -- evidenced by how bad he is at being undercover. And when Simon tells her that being proper matters more when no one in the Black cares, Kaylee doesn't really get it.

In the Simon/Kaylee follies, unlike most people, I generally side with Simon. Kaylee has a script running in her head about how things are supposed to go, and not only is Simon not on the same page, he's in totally different play most of the time. So instead of just telling him what she wants, she gets mad, flounces off, and he has NO Clue what just happened. Even though it's clear that they like each other, I just really find that Kaylee is unfair to Simon a lot of the time.

Simon was born with a silver foot in his mouth (to paraphrase the late Texas Gov. Ann Richards). For a top 3 percenter he ain't very bright. Back on Osiris he probably was one of those doofy Companion clients.

One of the best lines in the entire series.

This exchange is one of my favorites of the series

River Tam: Noah's ark is a problem.
Book: Really?
River Tam: We'll have to call it early quantum state phenomenon. Only way to fit 5000 species of mammal on the same boat.

Ya gotta love River.

Hey, I watched an old X-Files a few days ago with Jewel as a kidnapped teenager. She was so cute!

Ohh.. Jewel is in a lot of series though.. she also has a part in one of the Supernatural episodes. She plays a beastie. :)

You guys make me want to rewatch this series, for like the third of fourth time hehe. So it shall be. Too bad it's gone so soon though, two days of intense watching and it's gone.. :(

Don't worry. This is my first time watching and I'm still only up to Ep 7. But I suspect some here think I'm slacking.

I love the way she says that first line, like she's in a think tank meeting and very intensely announcing this.

I think she is childish and avoids adult discussion because she really likes him and all of a sudden for her there is a lot more at stake than a roll in her bunk. She can flirt and she can flounce and the ball is still in the air, unfair though it may be to him as he is cast as the idiot in this game. But.. the game is still afoot. If she is an absolute adult he might say "no" and then it is all over.

EP 8 - OUT OF GAS

Well that was a different side to Kaylee. My new favourite episode as has what's been lacking in previous; genuine drama, pathos, even a good use of flashback to flesh out characters. It was nice to see how the crew got together and feel a sense of why Mal loves the Serenity, so much that he won't abandon it. Shades of Janeway and Voyager. Best use of sfx as well. Only real bum note was the contrived 'pirates' stand-off. Meh.

The one thing it did get me wondering was whether there's been any Firefly porn à la Trek.

I watched it tonight too!

Out of Gas: I forgot how much I enjoyed this. I loved seeing how they all ended up on Serenity, Jayne's is hilarious.

Anyone know what it says on the back of the pilot's chair? Inara's shuttle chair has the same thing I think:

I agree about the pirates. They know he's suffocating, on a broken ship and that they shot him. And they just.. leave? Oh well, I can overlook it.

Yah that porntache was horrible!! I bet Zoe made him shave that off real quick.

OH and I think we should all just admire Mal's beautiful face for a moment.

EP 9 - ARIEL

Movie heist 101: If a robbery is described or shown as being perfect/foolproof in pre-planning stage, you can bet your bottom dollar it's all going to go belly up in the execution (see also Gambit, Badda-Bing...). How Jayne seriously thought he was going to get away with double-cross eludes me, but we all know he's not the smartest cookie. A nice action episode, though did throw up a couple of questions: who the hell are those creepy MiBs after River? (no answers please!). And surely that medical chopper-thing was too big to fit in hold? Shades of Voyager's shuttle bay :)
And...
it would have been a brave dramatic move if Mal had actually airlocked Jayne. But I guess as he was in Serenity:The Movie, that was going to be unlikely :)

This would have made a better movie, but that's to fill in all the insanity with explanations. It does bother me WHY in this huge hospital no one else is in the morgue and no one else is in or using the imaging chamber. It's just conveniently empty and not a tech in sight. But I still enjoyed it!

I think the most telling part is in the end:

JAYNE: What're you gonna tell the others?

MAL: About what?

JAYNE: About why I'm dead.

MAL:I hadn't thought about it.

JAYNE: Make something up. Don't tell 'em
what I did.

Mal stares at him for a bit and then closes the outer door. I think Jayne's remorse and that he actually cares what people think of him confirmed for him whatever suspicion of good he had about the man. Though it does boggle the mind a bit as they could have all ended up dead thanks to his betrayal.
