That Shanghai opening is just about ok as a musical pastiche. The rest of the movie's an abomination.

I endeavor to exceed myself.

Here's a pro tip, though: it helps not to be so solemn about oneself and one's opinions. ;)

See, I am of the opinion that some of the fans are so rigid, so close-minded in their acceptance of mainstream in Trek, that JJ Abrams failed before those same people saw one frame
    of footage

tell me I have those types pegged wrong? Cause, it feels dead on true

How so? I'd be perfectly fine watching it once.

But as it is, I won't get to see it at all. The nearest theater to me that is showing it is nine hours away. I'm not driving 18 hours to see one trailer and a movie I have absolutely no interest in seeing.

Just out of curiosity, what do you consider good?

More to the point, name one Trek film that isn't shallow or contrived...

Please don't misattribute that tedium to me - you messed up your quote tags, there.

Maybe so, but why not simply respond to the topics which are under discussion and to opinions as they're offered, and check at the door any attempts at "pegging" groups of fans?

I haven't read this entire thread, but what format is the trailer, 48fps / 3D, neither ?
    How is it presented ?

It's presented as IMAX 3D. Not 48 fps.

    I found this interesting:

Is the volcano example (at about 11:46 ...) a coincidence? ;)

Actually I like that discussion and the way things changed over time.

Never been that big a fan of the Prime Directive (when taken to extremes) myself. More a "no man is an island" type. But gland the writers included it. Might be interesting to see where they go with it.

Saw the 9 minute preview in IMAX yesterday. ****ing hell, now this is a Star Trek movie! It's of such high production value that it can't be laughed at. It doesn't look tired and substandard with the made for fans feel. It feels like a real movie for everyone. I consider myself a convert to the new world of Star Trek by JJ Abrams. No snide remarks or laughs or sighs at this stuff anymore. I wasn't sinking down in my chair being the only one looking forward to it like previous Trek movies. This Star Trek preview had the audience by the balls.

Obvious barcode scanners and designer lamps are not what I consider high production value. ;) Oh and the brewery, the brewery!

I thought the nine minutes I saw were better than that. Granted I did see it before The Hobbit 48fps which had visuals I wasn't entirely blown away with.

I wouldn't have thought production values were a particular problem in previous Trek (The movies anyway, especially given when they were made). Apparently STV could have used more cash for CGI at the end or something, but I would never have noticed. Then again I don't have a problem with MOO 1 graphics, so what do I know?

I guess the chase scene is the "puffy hands" moment in the latest film. Kirk "stunned" their ride? Does the genius level repeat offender not need to go to mission briefings? Oh how I hope there is a flash back where Kirk "gives it a miss" because "those things are sooooo boring" (I have decided to treat nuTrek as pure comedy by the way).

On the other hand the writers and Cumberbatch have said there will be a little more depth in this film. That's right, the "Prime Directive" is just the beginning folks! ;) I remember some people saying that wasn't even possible in a two hour, summer blockbuster, tent-pole, popcorn flick. Oh ye of little faith. :p And can someone tell Uhura to stop smiling condescendingly at Spock dammit! I knew there was a reason he shouldn't have a girl friend.

    What utter horse shit.

It seems those that loved the film take offense at every person who didn't have a gooey orgasm while sitting watching the film and every time they thought about it afterward.

It was an okay movie that had story issues and confused itself with Porky's a couple of different times.

I'm guessing that makes me rigid and close-minded?

I'd say that the general expectation is that Star Trek fans should be enthusiastic about Star Trek from time to time.
