Well after cobbling together a TOS-era Defiant-type ship I decided to whip up a Miranda/Reliant version as well.

    Nice.

So, how are you handling the main deflector? Are you going to just say to heck with it, it's not on the TWOK Reliant either?

Wasn't the big dish more of a main sensor than a deflector in TOS, anyway? Whenever deflectors are mentiontioned in TOS it is always in the plural, suggesting a variety of systems.

The notion of a single deflector dish is very much a TNG thing

As regards your ship designs, Blssdwlf, they look very nice! I particularly like the inclusion of the clamshell shuttlebay doors on the back of the Reliant, it really grounds the design in that period.

@CorporalCaptain - Bingo. The Reliant doesn't have it (and all her type continue not to have one even thru DS9 :) )

@Mytran - Thanks :D I agree, the whole "deflector dish" is a TNG thing. You are correct that in TOS (and TOS movies) the deflectors are mentioned in plural (plus they fly around sideways and backwards at warp necessitating 360 protection.) The big dish I attributed it as part of the sensor equipment. I'm not finished with the placement of the nacelle pylons and rollbar but happy with the aft hull shape.

Re-positioned the rollbar and nacelle pylons. I think this will be their final positions...

I think that the interconnecting dorsal and ventral appendages that hold up the nacelle pylons would be more akin to the neck of most class one starships, only facing in "reverse". Not exact, because looking at the Constellation class (refit), the interconnections really only have a passing resemblance.

Other then that, I think you have a really good start on the pre-refit Constellation class.

I have typically thought at first that the Constellation class as she first appeared was what she pretty much looked like at launch, but other TOS-era Constellation models have opened me up to the possibility, and the Constellation kitbashed, greebled look suggests a vessel not in her original design specs. That and the fact that the Enterprise was to be decommissioned at around the same time (ST III) or earlier that the Constellation class was supposed to be in service.

I still think that mostly only the earlier examples would have been built in this configuration, with later examples with higher registries such as the Stargazer probably being built in refit configuration, or in a "Phase II" configuration, but if the Larson and Loknar classes can originate in the TOS-era, so can the Constellation class.

    Thanks JES :)

I was thinking on the same lines about the vertical pylons. This revised WIP is using the same neck as the one on my Enterprise but straightened. A small cigar hull is used to connect the vertical pylon with the horizontal warp pylons. And now I've matched the nacelle orientations as well.

These are really great TOS interpretations. Interesting to see something more than FJ-style re-arrangements of TOS parts (although that's good, too). I really like this work.

As I'm seeing this TOS and pre-TOS work, I'd love to see some of Sternbach's Spaceflight Chronology work get similar treatment to what I'm seeing here. My pipedream, I suppose.

And an experiment in the 3-engined Dreadnaught/Dreadnought :)

It's meant to be a precursor to the Excelsior.

I like the pylons on this version of a otherwise typical 3 nacelled TOS era design :)
