We knew it was probably coming. Gatiss to write it though? I'm ok with that, while his Who output hasn't been great, I've liked a lot of other stuff of his he's written.

And Gatiss as Hartnell? You know I could see that...

Mark Gatiss is to write BBC2 drama about the creation of Doctor Who to celebrate the show’s 50th anniversary next year.
Broadcast reports that it will be called An Adventure In Space And Time. It’ll be 90-minutes long and feature the key personalities involved in creating the show (so presumably Verity Lambert, Sydney Newman and, you’d hope, William Hartnell). It will be produced by the BBC’s drama unit in Wales.
Steven Moffat will executive produce alongside BBC Wales’ Caroline Skinner.

“The story of Doctor Who is the story of television, so it’s fitting in the anniversary year that we make our most important journey back in time to see how the TARDIS was launched,” says Moffat.

Long-time Who fan Mark Gatiss, a former Gentleman of the League, has both written for and acted in the new series of Doctor Who. He also wrote the comedy sketches for the BBC’s Doctor Who Night back in 1999 which featured a very fanciful planning meeting between a Sydney Newman-type figure and a budding producer talking about a new time travel show the BBC was going to produce.

The real question is… will Gatiss cast himself as Hartnell? Can he resist the temptation?

Sounds good.

But I wouldn't want to see Gatiss as Hartnell. He always comes across the same in any role he plays on tv. I'd basically be expecting him to start spouting League of Gentlemen lines.

I wonder if they do a multi-Doctor story in DW would they get whoever plays Hartnell here to play the first Doctor too? It would seem an obvious step.

Sounds exciting, but I agree that Gatiss shouldn't play Hartnell.

Here's hoping William Russell and Carole Ann Ford make cameo appearances. :D

^That would be cool.

As for Gatiss, he isn't the greatest actor in the world, I can just see some similarity with Hartnell.

I'd disagree that whoever plays Hartnell should be used as the 1st Doc if they do any kind of multi-Doctor story. Obviously we all know the Doctor isn't real, but to see an actor playing Hartnell playing the doctor, then to see them as the Doctor themselves would suspend disbelief a little too much, for me at least.

So, is this going to be a Biopic, "Making of Doctor Who" kind of thing. Like Three's Company, The Partridge Family, The Jackson Family and a few others that were made a few years, where today's actors are playing the real folks who were involved in Doctor Who back in the day?

I'll love to see "Sydny Newman's" reaction to the Daleks after he had originally warned the production staff, "I don't want bug-eyed monsters!"

Sincerely,

Bill

In The Road to Coronation Street, the actor playing the young William Roache (Ken Barlow) was actually Roache's own son James. Around the same time, he appeared in Corrie, playing opposite his Dad but as Ken's grandson, James Cunningham. The same storyline featured William's other son, Linus (of Batman Begins and Law and Order fame) Roache, playing Ken's/ William's son and (both) James' Dad.

Linus had previously played the role of Ken's other son, Peter, who was by now played in the series by Chris Gascoyne.

Personally, I thought it was all pretty cool, as oppose to confusing, but to each their own!

Well as you said something like this isn't a massive suprise. Many had expected the BBC to do something special to celebrate the 50th Anniversary, with a theme night likely. No doubt with this as it's centre-piece.

Of course do we think they can resist the temptation to show it on Saturday the 23rd of September 2013. The actual anniversary date. Next I might be expecting to see "An Unearthly Child" airing after it.

This sounds pretty cool, though you would think that all the behind the scenes shenanigans that went on in the 80s, specifically during Colin Baker's run would practically write themsevles as this kind of drama.

I'm half joking, I understand making about Doctor Who's beginning is more appropriate for the 50th anniversary. But I still think another drama about titled The Colin Baker Years should be considered.

A tv drama spanning a couple of seasons chronicling the birth of Doctor Who would be great!

End of Season 7 premier of "adventures of space and time"

Casting director- alright what's your name?

"Colin baker"

I would not be too surprised if BBC 4 aired some Classic Who for the 50th Anniversary.

Sounds pretty interesting. I just hope (unlike that Hollywoodland movie about George Reeves) they focus more on the actual making of the show, and not just about the behind the scenes politics.

It'll definitely be cool to see the recreated original Console Room though!

That alone would be worth it. At the very least, we'd get some EPIC publicity shots of Matt Smith puttering around William Hartnell's console room for the 50th Anniversary. :D

given that we saw the RTDs console room in "The Doctors Wife" it would be very easy to include it in the show.

I like the idea of the Doctor finding a message from his younger self, buried deep in the TARDIS memory banks, possibly done by whoever plays Willam Hartnell in the drama.

Eve from SJA would also be a nice character to have around in one episode as well.

I think Nightowl1701 just meant seeing Matt Smith walking the set behind-the-scenes was exciting in itself (and I agree). But I also do hope they can include in the show itself as part of the anniversary celebration.

Of course, this is all assuming we see the classic console in this production.
