Main Viewer Blinkies

True enough. We DO see the Reliant main viewer as Khan stares out through it in TWOK, but there is no re-dressing of that part of the set from the Enterprise EXCEPT maybe the paint (the Reliant bridge had a lot more blue in it). The Grissom didn't have any viewscreen shots, and nor did the Saratoga that followed (which, while lit differently, was hardly re-dressed from Grissom at all).

Ok, forget that I mentioned Grissom. It's been a while since I've seen TSFS.

Anyway, as a directional indicator for the ship they'd be pretty much useless, since the ship moves in three dimensions and the blinkies only show movement in one.

So new question: What are your favorite viewer blinkies?

Well, my favorite blinkie moment is from Doomsday Machine when Decker and McCoy arrive on the bridge and Kirk asks "We're blind here, what's it look like?" Then a cut to the viewscreen showing the back and forth blinkies, accompanied by the back and forth blinkie sound effect, combined with the dramatic music.

Cool moment. But for some reason its loses some of its oomph in the remastered version.

...Assuming we can speak of a reuse when the Enterprise and Reliant sets were already dissimilar (a minor rearranging of the wild "pie wedges") and the Grissom set was only seen in narrow part. Indeed, some have argued that the Grissom set was significantly rearranged, the helm console now being quite a bit away from the center (perhaps so that it could be more confidently shot with all the portside wild elements removed) and at an angle. Who knows what that ship's viewer (if the ship even had one!) would have looked like, then?

As well as the helm section being closer to the wall, I came to the conclusion that they rotated it 180 degrees. The science station is Spock's station from TWOK, and to the right of it you can see the border of a door. If you look at the other stations along that wall as well, they're the stations on the starboard of the normal bridge set.

Interestingly, if you listen carefully, you'll notice that on the original Star Trek the interval between the viewer blips changes depending on the situation. I'm not certain if there's any sort of consistency to it, though.

Based on my observations, the only pattern I could see is that they cycled faster the faster the ship was going.

The refit Enterprise, Reliant, and Grissom didn't have viewer blinkies. Oddly, though no one seems to know what they're for, I don't like them not being there.

Not quite true. We don't see the Grissom's screen, so we don't know what it might or might not have shown. The refit E had them in the first two movies. In TMP, you can see them when Kirk orders a tactical display on screen of their approach to V'Ger at the 0:58:36 mark, In "Khan", you can see them as Kirk comes onto the Bridge just before Enterprise launches at the 0:29:50 mark, though oddly they don't show up in other Enterprise or Reliant viewscreen shots.
