Captain America: The Winter Soldier pre-release thread

During the Marvel Studios: Iron Man 3 panel, they announced that the Captain America sequel is officially title Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It will be released on April 4, 2014, and is being directed by the Russo brothers.

A good (and fairly obvious) choice.

A movie can't really do it in quite the same way the comics did, of course, but it's as strong a source material as any in Cap's canon.

Interested to see who they hire for Sharon.

Having never read any Captain America comics, during what time period is the Winter Soldier set and is that setting required to tell the story?

It's set in the present day, as most Cap stories are (with flashbacks to the Cold War that don't involve Steve).

It's modern, and yes it is required. The Winter Soldier is Bucky, who didn't die and was instead held in suspended animation by the Russians and trained as an assassin. It how Bucky is brought back into the modern day Marvel universe.

Great title. Glad they didn't go with the lazy numbers title like Iron Man.

I guess it should be obvious to comic fans what the movie will be about. :p

thing is though, people will still be lazy and just call it 'Captain America 2'. that or some - like me - will call it 'Winter Soldier'. i did similar with the Transformers movies, alternately calling them '2' or '3' or by the sub-titles.

Nice, I'm guessing that while Steve is in the modern world we will get flashbacks at least once, probably twice of events to Bucky in Russia.

I do hope Haley is recast as Sharon, Steve made comments many times how similar they seemed to him.

That would be a mistake. It would stop people from seeing Sharon as her own character, and minimize Steve's loss if his girlfriend ends up being the same woman (that's how the audience would perceive her).

I'd personally be quite happy to see Amanda Righetti return in the role - she already played Sharon Carter in the post-credits scene in Captain America.

I think that applies to if he hooks up with her daughter, too. Austin Powers 1, anyone?

She wasn't credited as Sharon Carter.

Captain America was my favorite of the solo Avengers movies. I'm pretty excited about the movie and hope they can do some good flashbacks to the 40's.

Wow, talk about your informative subtitles. To comics fans, those three words reveal a lot.

It feels a bit odd, though, because in Captain America: The First Avenger, the subtitle was a description of Cap himself. So this makes it sound (to the uninitiated) like Cap is the Winter Soldier. Might work better if '40s-style title conventions were still in use; then they could call it something like Captain America and the Winter Soldier or Captain America Meets the Winter Soldier.

If you mean the scene where Steve woke up in the fake hotel room and was greeted by a SHIELD "nurse," that was actually before the credits. The post-credits "scene" was a trailer for The Avengers.
