Well, now, let's not be hasty. There's no reason we still can't make amends. I mean, I don't remember the Founding Fathers ever saying "no backsies."
 
Soooooooooooooooooo the 4th has only got to do with a few states - not the rest.

No, it has to do with the whole country because the Declaration of Independence built the foundation of the country by setting up the values it's built on - "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." That's America in a nutshell. It's also among the most influential sentences ever written down.

Indeed. It borrows heavily from jurisprudential documents written after the French and English revolutions. And of course the Magna Carta (Which i went to visit the other day in the British Library in London...it was amazing).

More the idea of the Magna Carta. Have you read the document? With the exception of a couple of cities having their ancient rights reaffirmed, it's really good for the descendants of about 20 Barons.

You also have your timeline mixed up. The American Revolution predates the French Revolution. It was certainly inspired by the English Civil War (the Glorious Revolution to a degree), but both those wars have awkward religious strife mixed in.

Thanks for all the well wishes, everyone. I spent the 4th as I usually do, browsing through my various books on the Colonial and Revolutionary Era. Also, History Channel is showing The Revolution all day, which is a fantastic series-- I recommend checking it out if you haven't seen it.

I'm on a liquid diet for my colonoscopy tomorow. :sigh:

That I don't know, but this is a pretty good alt history based on the Revolution being averted.

Hah! With the temperatures lately, I wish I could. Especially since the AC in the pharmacy I work in these days is worthless.

I've always thought pharmacies are one of the few things that should never close. People still get sick on the holidays, you know.
Oh, I know, and I mostly agree. Every once in a while I just need to vent for a second. I usually don't gripe at all, but, well... look above. ;)

We did have a few people drop off prescriptions from the hospital, including an older woman whose daughter had been in a car accident. At that point I was certainly glad we were open.
 
It really wasn't my intention to come off too strongly in my first post in this thread. It's just that, well, Independence Day really means something to me and I think it should mean a lot to all Americans enough to the point we should honor what the day is and call it that. Our Independence Day. Calling it by the date just doesn't sit right with me, it minimizes the "impact" of the day to just another date.
 
Should I tell my American relatives to knock off posting "Happy Fourth of July!!!" on their facebook walls?

Clearly, they don't value freedom.

There's a movie "Mockumentary" called "The Confederate States of America" presenting a world where the Confederacy won the civil war, depicting a present-day America where slavery still exists (including a "Home Shopping Channel"-like depiction of slave trade among other things and political climate filled with good, hearty, southern men with strong, thick, Southern accents. It sort of points out even some present-day, real-world, "racist" things that still exist in popular culture. An interesting watch.

Yeah, I've seen that a few years back. It was ... interesting. But totally not related to the Articles of Confederation irregardless of the fact that the word "confederation" is used.
