I felt for the second week running it lacked a certain spark. Not sure why, or what.

Just it felt it lacked some gravity. Particularly Reny's death. It shocked me in the book, yet felt hurried here. Some scenes felt flat.

The Tywin/Arya scene was great, of course, but it lacked more like that.

Not sure why it felt less engaging, it just did for me.

I actually wonder if Renly's death was shot to be the end of last week's episode, but held over so that that episode didn't overrun, or something.

I voted 'above average' but only because last week's set the bar so high, that it was a hard act to follow. Also, not having read the book, the death of Renly meant that the rest of the episode never quite reached the 'WTF?!' heights of that scene in the opening minutes. But with Charles Dance and Peter Dinklage in fine form, there was still plenty to enjoy in this episode.

I should say also that having been a bit 'meh' about season 1, I have in the last week read almost all of the first book in the series. Sadly for my bank balance, I am now entirely addicted and am going to download the rest in the series as soon as I can. A total convert!

on the one hand I'm disappointed that the seasons are so short, we're half done right now
but on the other hand, if we had a 20 episode season they'd have to put all the boring parts in, like Arya doing chores at Harrenhal, Jon and the watchmen just walking through the snow etc
a shorter season does seem to make the most of things

I can't wait to see the Battle of Blackwater :D

my favorite characters this season are
Tyrion as always
Arya
Brienne
Davos

I voted above average since this episode was just a tad below the last one, but there was still lots of goodness to enjoy.

The one aspect I was a bit underwhelmed with was Renly's death, which I think could have been executed (ha!) a bit better.

Cersei did indeed order mass production of wildfire in the book, with Tyrion finding out and taking control after the fact. So that was true to the book rather than a change.

Tywin and Arya staring each other down was great, as was Brienne pledging herself to serve Catelyn.

Qarth is really nicely realized on screen. They've made a change to the style of dresses worn in Qarth. In the books they leave one breast exposed, and Dany takes to wearing that style of dress in honor of her hosts. I guess that would have been too much nudity even for HBO, especially with the show getting a lot of attention for its nudity already.

It looks like Dany and Doreah are heading for sexy time, which is... awesome!

This was the first episode to feature scenes filmed in Iceland, and they looked amazing, really adding to the epic feeling the show is aiming for.

I thought that had to be Iceland. New Zealand couldn't have that much in the way if ice caps. :)

The second season of Thrones was filmed in Northern Ireland, Iceland, and Croatia.

The ratings for the latest episode hit a new series high: 3.903 million viewers for the initial airing. The show is averaging over 11 million viewers per episode this season across all HBO platforms, making it HBO's second most watched show behind True Blood (which averaged about 12.5 million viewers per episode across all HBO platforms in its fourth season).

As an aside, on a personal level, I think that the Irish filmed scenes and locations in GOT are much more evident than last year.

Watched the episode last night, and that was one of the tamest episodes of Thrones I've seen. I'm not saying that's a bad thing because I still really really enjoyed it, but the sex quotient and the violence was really kept to a minimum. That could have easily been like a TV-14 rating.

Anyway, I'm really glad they are finally developing the Dany storyline. It's felt like with everything going on this season, they have kind of forgotten about her but this week she took center stage and I'm just happy they are moving that plot forward a lot more. Also liked the stuff between Arya and Stannis (And the end)

Also, agreed about Renley's death. It felt like it happened too quickly and I thought he was a pretty big character. Having not read the books I Don't know if it was supposed to be sudden and quick, but just thinking about it, it kind of reminds me of when Dukoo (SP?) was killed at the beginning of Star Wars III. It just felt a little easy.

It sounds like they've been under fire for some time for the nudity and violence. Although, for some reason, violence doesn't seem to garner as much vitriol from American audiences as the nudity does. Still don't get that one, and I'm an American. I guess they have started caving in to the sanctimonious twats. Glad to see, however, that the story did not appear to suffer because of it.

Anyway, yes, Renly's death does occur suddenly and without much warning. The only change I can tell is that, in the book, it was Katlyn (sp?) who said it was Stannis' doing. In the show, it was Brienne that said the shadow looked like Stannis. In the book, I don't recall anyone ever saying that the shadow looked like him, more it was a gut instinct that Kat had that this had to be something that he set into motion to kill his brother on the morning of the battle between them to decide who would be the ruling Baratheon going forward.

I could be mistaken, but I think it is in in a Davos chapter somewhere that he mentions the shadow looking like Stannis, or at least inferring it.

I don't think they're caving to critics. It's more likely just happenstance that there was no nudity in this episode. The whole season is already in the can before it airs, and I doubt they cut anything from the episode to tone it down.
