Glee: Season 3 Discussion/Premiere preview clip

I know this sounds stupid, but I still remember catching just part of an ep of Dawson's Creek where his dad is looking for something in the car while driving, gets into an accident, and dies. I didn't even follow the show so I didn't have an emotional connection to the characters, but it's always stayed with me.

I remember that, too. As I recall, he dropped an ice cream cone in his lap . . . .

And to think the same actor once played the Flash!

I didn't expect that episode, which is maybe why I didn't post much about it last night. I was shocked, and maybe slightly annoyed that Glee calls itself a comedy and then we get that. I was an emotional punch in the gut, and maybe the best episode of the season but there was also a part of me that wondered if they went a little too far. I mean you go from the topic of teen suicide to don't text and drive and it was pretty much a double whammy of gut punch. I wasn't ready for that and I'm still kind of thinking about this episode today.

The topics it covered were really well done, and unfortunately all to realistic. These two issues are very contentious in our society today and Glee handled both of them with seriousness and care. The music did take a back seat this week, despite it being the regionals episode but I still wonder if the writers made this one too dark for it's own good. I wonder if perhaps the don't text and drive did take it too far and because of that, I'm hesitant to praise this episode as much as others seem to.

See I don't really mind this too much when done well.

I mean look at Trek it has done a wide variety of story types. It's an adventure show, but has done some of (at the time) hardest hitting dramatic material out there. It has also done comedy.

Another show I love Supernatural is a action/ adventure show, but really hammers away at the family character drama, and still manages to get noticed by critics as one of the funniest shows on tv, and it absolutely isn't a comedy.

When a shows does it well doesn't bother me at all. And for Glee I thought they handled the material well. A little preachy perhaps, but it all felt true to these over the top characters.

Has nobody been watching it since it came back?

The resolution to the cliffhanger reminded me of Smallville. Great cliffhanger, resolved in 2 seconds.

I'm a HUGE fan of Saturday Night Fever so I loved that episode.

I do not like the way they've handled Quinn in the last two episodes. For one, while we saw here in 2 scenes last night, she wasn't in the episode at all. Also, last week, I felt kind of cheated in that we have this ultra powerful episode as a midseason finale only to come back and the cliffhanger gets resolved (And if the previews are any indication for next week, I'm not going to be happy at all still...). Yeah I know we're moving towards graduation and the theme of what do you want to do with your life (A theme that feels heavy handed by the way, as I wasn't forced to choose my profession after high school, I went to college) but we had the chance for some real character work with Quinn and they blew it. This show sucks in the character development angle, as these characters are like pieces on a chess board, moving as needed and nothing more.

As for the episode last night, it was fun, but I keep thinking if I had the DVDs and watched the last three episodes back to back to back, I would feel like the writers just dropped the ball on the entire season.

They really blew the Quinn cliffhanger. It's as if "The Best of Both Worlds Part 2" had started two weeks after part one with Geordi and Wesley walking down the corridor saying "I wonder what would have happened if we hadn't managed to save the Captain?"

Hey, so the last of the Glee Project "winners" has appeared, and he's done in one episode than the other three combined. The guy had more acting chops than his time on Glee Project showed (he mostly cried, or stared expressionless through that series), and his story was Glee-standard sappy and unbelieveable, but what the hell - I enjoyed it enough. He's supposed to have two episodes, and I doubt he'll be doing anything more than a song in his next appearance, but it's darn sure more worthwhile than spending weeks after "winning" a show standing in the background lip-syncing.

Too bad all that disco crap, and all those unlikeable characters had to speak and sing too. Sometimes I'm surprised how much I once liked this show...

I finally got caught up with the show this weekend.

In word, blah.

I don't care about Blaine's Hollywood brother, don't care about Sue being the sole coach of the Cheerios, and I'm in total agreement that they botched the Quinn cliffhanger completely.

More problematic will be the story point of her recovery, and her attitude (as evidenced by her little rant to Artie at the end of the episode about "getting better," -- particularly if the writers do wind up writing it so she walks again. They've got an opportunity to show the full range of emotion and behavior and attitudes - both personally and societally for something like this, and Dianna Agron is one of the show's best actors, so I'd hope they'd recognize the opportunity they've created for themselves and not just write her recovery to take place just in time for Nationals so everything is hunky-dory again.

She'll probably be walking at the beginning of next week's episode.

"Boy it would have sucked if I'd been stuck in that chair."

That'd be such a cop-out, and frankly, rather infuriating given her speech to Artie, as if she's "better" than being consigned to a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

If she is better and walking after tonight's episode I'm going to just finish out the season and then I'm done with Glee. Even thinking about what could have been is pissing me off so much.

When i start fast forwarding through an unseen episode i know a show is in deep trouble personally.. i've totally lost interest in the personal stories of the cast, there's little good humor left and the song selection is acceptable to abysmal lately (with very few exceptions).

It's a far cry from season 1 when Glee fired on all cylinders.. they've lost focus, creativity and its uniqueness and from what i see their viewership has almost halved since season 1 and 2 so i'm apparently not alone out there with my opinion.

Well.. there's a ton of other good shows out there and i can watch season 1 and 2 episodes whenever the mood strikes.

Time to say goodbye.

I found myself doing other things (And focusing on other things) while the show was on in the background tonight. I really wanted to like tonight's episode, and there are a ton of things I do like but I just can't get over the fact that this show having awful character development is now biting it in the ass. The writers expect me to feel emotion for graduation coming up and the whole thing about saying goodbye after 2 plus seasons of these characters coming across as awful people? This whole graduation storyline and saying goodbye and being overly emotional about it is overwaught and over-dramatic. It's almost like the series is coming to an end and quite frankly, I think now might be a good time to end it.

What's going to happen after these characters graduate? Are we going with them to see what they are up to? Are we staying at McKinley and continuing to focus on the Glee Club?

As for the Quinn Cliffhanger update of the week, I'm glad they didn't make her walk again (Would have ruined the series if they had) but man i wish they had done a better job developing this from "On My Way" to now. Also, where's Kerofsky? He's been the most interesting character of the season and now he's nowhere to be seen.

Yeah. She hardly gets any solos either.

So if I have this right Rachel, Finn, Santana, Kurt, Mercedes, Quinn, Mike and Puck are leaving at the end of the year.

That leaves Artie, Tina, Blaine, Brittany and Sam for next year?

I might be mistaken but I can't remember anything about Sam and Brittany leaving.

The more incredible thing is that a character whose main characteristic and who has consistently been portrayed as being as dumb as a brick (Puck) will actually be graduating from high school.

If Brittany can graduate then anyone can.

Sometimes I forget Tina's even on the show. I think Teen Jesus has had more lines than her this season.

You're correct. Sam is a junior and Brittany will most likely be held-back. Also, for better or worse Sugar, Rory, and Joe (Teen Jesus) will likely be back. It's rumored that Harmony and Sebastian might both be joining the Glee club next season too. Should be interesting.

Renewal is good. I really hope they downsize for next year, the current cast is WAY too large. I would really prefer they keep the number of kids to five or six, fill the rest with random secondary characters, and focus in from there. Nothing more dumb in this show than to have main cast sitting in the background for weeks at a time watching others sing and talk.

^Yup, I like it when the have a mix of teen and adult storylines as well. I was glad to see Burt back in this episode.

I also hope they cut back on the stunt casting episodes. Just takes more time away from the cast.

The tribute episodes can be hit or miss. If they do more I hope they take them out of the comfort zone a bit.
