Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Decker's bulge?

It's a little known fact really. Long before Data's cat... there was Decker, smuggling his budgie past Kirk. Blatantly disobeying his no pets policy.

The question is... did it never occur to anyone that those uniforms could produce that... result... or did someone actually want the Decker Unit on screen? :alienblush:

Well, Sulu's the one with erection in the novelization, caused when Ilia arrived to take her first shift at navigation.
Gene Roddenberry's gaydar was not so hot!

Come to think of it (if you'll pardon the expression), I never found that whole Deleted Scene where Sulu clumsily shows Ilia around her new station, all that convincing.

If you ever get a chance to see singer/songwriter James Lee Stanley, go see him. He spent a number of years as an extra, mostly on DS9. He talks about his time on Trek including the famous "Star Trek Underwear" story. From what he says the situation with Decker wouldn't be possible in later series.

George Takei is gay, Sulu is not.

Which is why the scene was originally cut. The theatrical cut is rated "G". And the scene was also not restored for the Director's Edition. Remember, the scramble to add stuff to the Special Longer Version was done without the director's participation.

The novelization of the scene is... amusing.
