For a while I thought Zoe might be Rain Robinson, Aegis agent (as established in the Khan books) but the age would have been all wrong. She'd have been closer to Shaun's age. My brain sort of cast her and Qat as a weird combination of Zoe Saldana and Sarah Silverman, if you can picture that.

True confession: At one point, the stowaway was going to be Rain Robinson, but I ended up discarding that idea. But, yeah, I did have Sarah Silverman in mind when I writing that character.

(There's also probably a bit of Claudia from Warehouse 13.)

As for Zoe Saldana . . . at this late date, I honestly can't remember if that was deliberate or not. I wrote the proposal for this book way back in 2009, before the new movie came out, so it might have been a coincidence--or maybe the advance coverage of the movie was lurking at the back of my brain somewhere.

Anyway, glad you liked the book!

Interesting.

When the ending came along and it was clear Zoe was going to be revealed as someone who isn't what she appears, my first thought was- "I was right, it was Rain!" And it turned out to be something completely different.

That's funny, though, that you picked up on the Sarah Silverman vibe.

(I still think they should have kept her as regular on Voyager, as they apparently considered. She would have livened things up.)

Ok, my trek mania has returned in full force. I bought 3 of the latest eBooks I did not have I plan on reading RoT first, is there any episodes or books that would improve enjoyment?

Well, The Rings of Time does expand on a throwaway reference in "Tomorrow is Yesterday" to Shaun Geoffrey Christopher's mission to Saturn (in that it actually depicts said mission), but aside from that it's pretty self-contained.

A great and very solid no-frills Trek novel, absolutely wonderful. I loved every minute of it.

The only caveat - I smelled the "surprise character connection" the minute they both had made their appearance. I mean, Zoe Saldana, come on! And having one of them conveniently wear a veil... Hardly subtle.

The funny thing is, I think the Zoe Saldana thing was entirely by accident or unconscious. I honestly don't remember doing that on purpose!

Well, I for one didn't see the Zoe thing coming. I wasn't to happy with the "stealth" insertion of a Q into the story at what seemed like the last minute. (This was my only serious problem with the book)

I didn't see the thing with the Doctor coming at ALL. (Nice job on that one.)

Overall, an Outstanding rating from me.

Finished it and really enjoyed it. Not the deepest or darkest Trek novel I've ever read, but none the worse for that.

I finished this book last nigth I really enjoyed reading baout the Saturn Mission with Shaun Christopher and the mysterious probe connects the story to Kirk's time.

Since it has been a whiel, why isn't the Q we saw in the novel the same one as "visits" Picard? It does not seem as if the other Q left the continuum in the 23d century and Quinn is inside a comet, AFAIR.

Officially at least, Starfleet did not encounter the Q until "Encounter at Farpoint," many decades after "The Rings of Time."

And of course the Q can effortlessly travel through time, so there's no more reason to assume that this Q is "native" to the 23rd century than to assume she's from the 21st. It could easily be that after the Continuum started to take notice of humanity around the 2360s, this one decided to pop back and take a look at their past.

That certainly could be true. It just seems as if the Q we are the most familiar with seems to meddle more with the vastly lesser lifeforms then the others.
