Happy 100th birthday to my home state of Arizona! Arizona was the last state of the lower 48 to become part of the Union ( we don't really count those slackers Alaska and Hawaii anyway ) Here's to 100 years of beautiful weather, wonderful landscapes, crazy politics, and fascinating Western, Native American, and Hispanic culture.

I love the Simpsons episode where Apu is trying to become a citizen, and he correctly identifies a Flag with 47 stars made after New Mexico and before Arizona had joined the Union. And Homer only gives him half credit Its one of my favorite episodes for so many reasons.

The governor may be an embarrassment, the state is not.

Arizona is overrated.

Most of the country promotes it as the epicenter er of the Southwest, but the food isn't as good, the desert is not as interesting, the capitol city is not as cool, and the history is not nearly as dynamic.

Then there's the whole fact that people think Albuquerque is actually part of Arizona. That really drives me nuts.

Hey, any state that can produce a person like Gabby Giffords, whose strength and determination are an inspiration, can't be all that bad.

Besides which, from everything I've seen, there are some amazingly beautiful places to see there.
