The Phantom Menace 3D Release

Episode I is a good movie.
It is.

As you say, the exceptions for it really warped peoples' expectations for it. It wasn't Citizen Kane so it must be the worst movie ever made.

But it really isn't. I know people who saw the PT before the OT and wonder why it gets such a bad rap. I tell them it's because they're not wearing the goggles while drinking the kool-aid.

Jar-Jar was never THAT BAD. He is what he is. A small group of the socially challenged couldn't understand that and pored on the vitriol. Then everyone else joined in because it was the popular thing to do.

Episode I is a good movie.

It's not going to wind up in the National Film Registry...but it's a good movie.

I'd rather watch two hours of Episode I than twenty minutes of AVATAR. Yeah. You heard me. I went there, bitches.

This fits my earlier point exactly. AVAVTAR was completely bland and forgettable film I have no desire to see again. But I won't waste my life whining about it.

AVATAR for me was exactly what I thought it would be - a visually exciting experience. I was blown away by the colours and the 3D, but yes, as a story it was completely blah and I have no desire to watch it at home.

Check this. On Thursday, my local theatre will be showing a total of 17 movies on eight screens, and The Phantom Menace is set to open in screening room No.1 (the largest one, equipped with all the digital bullshit they charge extra for). There are three scheduled showings, one at 3 PM (CET), one at 5:45 PM and one at 8:30 PM.

So far (little under 38 hrs and 30 mins before the first showing) , ZERO tickets have been sold, and exactly ZERO seats have been reserved. Tickets cost around $7.50.

I don't know what to make of it, honestly.

EDIT: About Avatar - I've seen in twice, once in the cinema, and once at home, as soon as it came out on DVD. I did like it, but that's it. For me, the rewatch value of that movie is almost non-existent.

Give it time. Remember that this is rerelease and there should be much more tickets sold the closer we get to Friday.

Also your 3D tickets cost that little? Now I want to live where you live. :rommie:

I try to live by that credo myself. Outside of a couple of threads on the BBS I barely even mention AVATAR, even with two friends who are fairly sizeable movie buffs. The movie blew my socks clean off with its breakthrough, mind-blowing visuals. For those, I give the movie a solid A. But its story is little more than DANCES WITH WOLVES set in outer space, the villains are one-dimensional cardboard stereotypes and a lot of the human acting is just plain atrocious. I kept waiting for the CGI avatars to appear on the screen so I could stop paying attention to the awful human characters. So I give the rest of the movie a somewhat generous D-, and since the story and acting are the bulk of of any halfway decent film the entire project falls limp in spite of the amazing special effects.

I've never seen TPM. That's how much interest I have in seeing it. Even when it's been shown for free on TV. I cannot picture anything that would make me want to shell out $15 to go see it in 3D. I already have my favorite 3D movies on Blu-ray.

Avatar I saw once at my buddy's place. He doesn't have a Blu-ray, so we saw it on DVD. Boring as heck. Graphics looked like a very very well made video game that I wasn't playing.

I know that one of the cinemas here, I like to go to, has midnight screening tonight, as the movie will starting tomorrow. Tickets are most likely at least $20 for a 3D release.

I think it's going to run somewhere in the neighborhood of $15 or $16 here in my town. If so, I'll still go...but I won't be terribly giddy about the combined ticket and 3-D glasses price. If it weren't a STAR WARS film I'd be avoiding this 3-D hype like the plague. Sixteen bucks for one person to see a movie before you purchase any snacks at the concession stand is borderline criminal...but it's a 3-D presentation so there's nothing the public can do unless they stay home.

Don't be hatin' on theaters for the movie ticket price. They see very little of that money. It is partially why it costs $903 for a soda.

MovieHouse, which is a local chain in Northern Ireland, charges the same for 3D as 2D movies. They give out large, but not uncomfortable 3D glasses with a security tag, which they then collect at the end.

LMAO!!!

Just smuggle in your own food.

I usually do that.

I had a buddy once who chastised me for doing so by saying "you're taking money out of the theater's hands doing that! It's like cheating and it's not right! You didn't buy that stuff from them!"

Needless to say, they never found where I hid his body.

Oh, I know. And I'm not hating on the theater per se. I know they get only a fractional cut of that take. I just balk a little at the rising costs of tickets, especially with the current digital 3-D rage. The prices are about ninety percent of the reason why I wait to see most new movies on DVD or BluRay.

The ticket guy on the entrance once caught my sister trying to smuggle a bag of chips and a bottle of cola. He told her to hide it better and let her in. :D

The benefit for me will be taking my little girl to the cinema to see a Star Wars movie for the first time.

That's worth $20-$30 to me, no question.
No arguments with that. Hope you enjoy it. Although on the money side of things the cost of cinema is getting dirty expensive.

I can't stand this current trend of people paying to sleep in the movie theater. I guess it's better than talking on a cell phone, but really, stay home. Or get your dosage adjusted.
They aren't paying for that. We are paying for it. We're the ones who have to listen to these assholes talk during the movie, on their cell phone or to the person beside them. Just rent the DVD and talk about it then for gods sake.

I wouldn't go as far to say it's a good movie but i'd rather watch it again in 3D over Avatar again.

Yeah, it's been harder and harder to justify going to see movies at the theater when it's cheaper to wait for the DVD, buy it, watch it once, then throw it away. :) However, we still go an average of once a month, because there's still something irreplaceable about that whole communal "going to the movies" experience.

I can't see how they can object to you bringing food in. They're not running a restaurant or cafe, they're providing entertainment. You're not obliged to eat their food when you buy a ticket to see the movie.

It's a private establishment, they can set whatever rules (in that vein) that they want. Most theaters make their profit on the concessions, not the actual movies.

And I'm also glad to have an opportunity to take my son to see this in a theater. The wife wants to make sure he watches the OT (or at least ANH) first though.
