Well, keep in mind folks that when "will they or won't they?" becomes "they will and they did," the air often comes out of the balloon.
I kinda hope those secrets DO come out. It's becoming a little boring not knowing SOMETHING. Conspiracy only works for so long for me.
They've been doing a good job of not being arc heavy this season while still teasing us with stuff here and there. It is Feb sweeps next month so I suspect that there will be episodes dealing with what we've learned so far this season...which isn't much, but still pretty significant. We know that this conspiracy goes beyond the Mayor, I think there were some who believed the Mayor was behind Joanna's murder. He still could be, but I doubt that now. Perhaps the State Governor? Or someone else? Hopefully we get some answers soon.
I pray they don't do what some shows have done in the past - reveal that they DID already sleep together a while ago, but never mentioned it. Hunter really pissed me off when they did that, and Bones did it even more half-assed.
I think that would piss off all the shipper fans...including me. The fact that they're aware of us and Nathan and Stana have both said it should happen, makes me think they will "reward" us with the pairing on screen.
Someone has to "finally" break the Moonlighting Curse and i have faith that the writers and Andrew Marlowe are capable enough to find other ways to mine the Castle/Beckett relationship.. why should a relationship suddenly become boring once they're in it? Castle is still a man-child and Beckett is still the serious type (though she has loosened tremendously since she met Castle) so there's still potential though in a different way and i'm looking forward to it.. especially the scene where they make it official in the precinct and everyone reacts with a shrug aka "We knew for ages" and starts resolving the bets they've been having for years about when it will happen Not having seen Bones or other shows at all the idea of them doing the nasty already without anyone (even the show viewers) is kinda intriguing and a nice twist but totally wrong for Castle as everything they do screams they both want it but are holding off.. this would probably heavily damage the ship or outright sink it. Hey.. it's only 2-3 weeks before we finally know what the February sweeps bring this time.. can't wait.
"The Blue Butterfly" was awesome. Nicely paced, well written, well acted and the late 40's theme was great! Stana and Nathan were awesome as usual, Stana looked magnificent. I can normally figure out the crime pretty early on but was baffled by this one for a while. Not sure if I will express this correctly or not, but every relationship we see in the show seems to be a mirror or some kind of fore shadowing (not really the term I want to use) for Kate and Rick.There were a lot of great pieces of dialogue in this episode as well. I laughed pretty much all the way through, and I think this is the second episode this season where we've seen Rick really giddy about a case.
I thought it was a swell episode. The flashbacks and the insane Irish acccent made me laugh. Plus Castle kept on asking the one detective to say "Boyo" in an Irish accent and got shut down on it.
That was a fun episode. I should've been able to guess the twist ending since it was rather obvious but I was so caught up with how fun the episode was that it didn't cross my mind. Stana Katic looked great in the 40's clothes. Loved the one with the slit up the legs. Nathan Fillion looked a little bulky in the suit though. Is he gaining some weight? Jeez, Mark Pellegrino is in everything these days.
It was a reasonably fun episode, a good try to emulate the '40s detective milieu, but the cinematography was too modern. I was spoiled long ago by Moonlighting's film-noir episode "The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice"; that show's cinematographer, Star Trek's Jerry Finnerman, was trained by the generation of cinematographers who'd cut their teeth in the film noir era, and so he was able to replicate their approach to a tee (plus he shot in black and white). So this felt like a pale imitation in comparison. The music also felt a little inauthentic, like it was trying too hard but not really capturing what it was imitating. I also have a hard time buying that the diary was actually written in the style of a hard-boiled detective novel. It would be one thing if they'd established that Joe was an aspiring author who'd chosen to dramatize the case in that style -- or if they'd had the diary itself be fairly prosaic and made it Castle's imagination that interpolated the Chandleresque elements. Then there's the coincidence that the case just happened to involve people who were good fits for each of the show's main characters, not just in role but in appearance, age, and ethnicity. The whole thing was just too contrived. (Spoiler paragraph) And as soon as they revealed that the bodies in the car had been burned, I knew that Joe and Vera had faked their deaths. It was obvious for two reasons: the in-story reason, that there's no point in burning two people who've already been shot to death unless it's to conceal their identities (and it was weak writing to have none of the detectives realize that), and the metatextual reason, that after getting us to identify Joe & Vera with Castle & Beckett, it was unlikely that the writers would give them a tragic ending. Although I only realized that the elderly couple were Joe & Vera around the same time that Castle was putting it together.
Christopher, I think Castle was exaggerating the contents of the diary to suit his purposes. The diary was read by Rick, and we saw how giddy he was throughout this entire episode. He's also a mystery writer. He probably embellished the style of the diary for dramatic flair. We know that Castle gets carried away with things he enjoys and as for using his imagination to match up the characters with his friends is perfectly natural to me. Anyone of us would probably do that without a visual representation already available to us. Sometimes I think you're overly critical of this show. I rarely see you type anything positive or FUN about it in this thread. As a writer yourself it would be interesting to get your perspective on things instead of just poking holes in the plot. Oh, and I'm not saying you aren't having fun watching this show but it just appears that way. I'm all for being critical when it merits it but it just seems like you don't have fun watching this show.
Well, yes, in the flashbacks. But there were scenes in which he appeared to be directly quoting the diary, and it was in the same hardboiled tone. My point is that if the intent was to have it be his own embellishment, they didn't do enough to distinguish his imagination from the putative content of the actual diary. Well, it's definitely not as good as it was in the first two seasons. There are still fun qualities, but they're lightweight things that don't lend themselves to much analysis.
I do agree with you about the transition shots with the city sky lines between present day and 1947. It kind of threw things off by showing the modern day sky line then transitioning into the past. I get why they did that but it was somewhat jarring.
^Didn't they have at least one shot of the 40's skyline (from what looked like vintage film) in the beginning? After that, I stopped noticing.
Fun episode, though I think it would have been even better had the '40s scenes been shot in black & white. The vibrant colours in the flashbacks didn't fully immerse you in the period, I thought.
