Sons of Ajax

After working on the Ajax for rather a while now, I thought I would take some of the elements that I have built and try and add to the collection of ships that I'm building. At the moment I am working on ships from 'Ships of the Star Fleet: Vol 1'.
First up is the Endeavor - initially caught my eye as a candidate since I was intrigued by the intermediate design of the linear nacelles.

I had originally built the Endeavor using a secondary hull based off Charles Casimiro's 11 footer plans - it was pointed out that the design uses the more curvaceous secondary hull favoured by Jefferies and FJ. Once I had built this new version for the Endeavour, I was also able to use it to build the Achernar from the same volume.

Both are still WIPs and there is still some detail to add before I get down to texturing. Still trying to decide how to detail the inner side of the Endeavor's nacelles - the current version is based on a conversion kit for the Polar Lights Enterprise - might be making some additions.

Great stuff. I love the shape of the Endeavor's new warp pylons. The only thing that looks a bit off to me is the two warp nacelles. It almost looks like they should be flipped upside down to me.

^ That nacelle style appears in one of Vance's early toolkits.

Wherever it came from originally, I think they're the "right" way up.

It would still be interesting to see them inverted.

That secondary hull choice is just so beautiful. That looks like the FJ saucer. You might try putting tha Casimiro saucer on the FJ secondary hull...

It wasn't until I started building the Endeavor that I realised how much history the design had. It is based on one of Mike Minor's early painting of the Enterprise for Phase II. This is version was made after Ralph McQuarrie's had been rejected as too different from what had gone before. Note the different nacelles from Minor's later artwork.

Geoffrey Mandel then took this version and created the following schematics in his 'Star Fleet Handbook - Vol 12'.

This version was subsequently modified in to the Endeavor in SotSF: Vol 1 by Todd Guenther and Aridas Sofia, which is the version that I have tried to build.
So, although the nacelles seem to be upside down, this is the way that the design has developed.

Nice FJ style technical Schematic there always did like the older fandom books from the 80's and early 90's and the FASA RPG Ship Reference Manuals for there Star Trek game :) :techman:

The nacelles on the Endeavour are a little weird, but I find myself liking this design more than the final refit TMP configuration. It seems more true to the TOS design. If it were me, I would've softened the profile shape of the nacelle, making its shape a little more like a Klingon nacelle.

Does anyone know if Mandel's Starfleet Handbooks are posted anywhere on the web?

Oh, not this hoary old chestnut again.

The McQuarrie and Ken Adam renderings and study models were for the aborted Planet of the Titans film, and were abandoned when that project was scuttled. When Phase II happened Jefferies was borrowed back to do a new take on the Enterprise. The former weren't rejected, they just went into the dustbin with the movie that spawned them.
