Apple threatened In Icons company for making a Steve Jobs doll

Apple is no stranger to throwing lawsuits around, but instead of accusing another company of ripping off its products, it's now blaming them for ripping off its former leader.

In Icons, a Chinese company, recently created an action figure of Apple's former CEO Steve Jobs. Jobs died from pancreatic cancer complications back in October 2011.

The figurine is 12 inches tall and looks nearly identical to Apple's co-founder. It features Jobs' signature black turtleneck, blue jeans, sneakers, glasses, and even has interchangeable hands to show his different movements. The doll also comes with two Apples, one of which has a bite out of it, a "One More Thing" backdrop and a bar stool.

The doll is already up for sale on eBay for $135, and In Icons was set to begin selling it in February. However, if Apple has its way, the Steve Jobs look-alike won't make it to store shelves or consumer's hands.

According to Apple's letter to In Icons, the tech giant owns all rights pertaining to its founder, and the "likeness" of the doll falls under those rights. Toys that resemble the company's logo, appearance, likeness or someone's name are subject to a legal action if not made by Apple itself.

A Steve Jobs action figure. I need to get that!

Re: Apple Goes After Toy Company For Making Lifelike Steve Jobs Figuri

Am I the only one who finds it odd that Apple Corp. would "own" the likeness of Steve Jobs?

Re: Apple Goes After Toy Company For Making Lifelike Steve Jobs Figuri

Maybe they actually built him.

Re: Apple Goes After Toy Company For Making Lifelike Steve Jobs Figuri

I wonder what accessories he would come with

I wish the headsculpt was better.

Gentlemen, they can rebuild him. They have the technology...

Re: Apple Goes After Toy Company For Making Lifelike Steve Jobs Figuri

I can't get the image of Bill Gates in his office playing with Steve Jobs and Tux dolls like Dark Helmet out of my head.

Re: Apple Goes After Toy Company For Making Lifelike Steve Jobs Figuri

Woah, do you wipe your ass like that? That's seriously uncool, dude.

Re: Apple Goes After Toy Company For Making Lifelike Steve Jobs Figuri

I thought he was pointing down and gesturing, " My balls are HUGE!!!"

Seriously, I have no idea. It's such a fucked up picture I had to post it.

Re: Apple Goes After Toy Company For Making Lifelike Steve Jobs Figuri

The picture is weird and the lawsuit to be expected (unfortunately). But the little guy himself is cool. If I were into action figures, I would have to have him!

Well, I'd expect a lawsuit coming from the family, but not from the company. How weird is it that your company owns the rights to your image? If that goes through, we're in big trouble.

Re: Apple Goes After Toy Company For Making Lifelike Steve Jobs Figuri

A company would certainly have the rights to your image or likeness if you're a)the founder of that company b)the person was the literal figurehead of your company.

I can see the arguments Apple would want to make, but they'd also probably be wise to simply latch onto this company because that's a neat looking little toy.

Woah, by default? I seriously hope not. If Jobs wrote it down like "Apple owns my likeness", than good for him. But just because I found a company shouldn't mean my face belongs to the company. That's not the world I want to live in.

Re: Apple Goes After Toy Company For Making Lifelike Steve Jobs Figuri

Me either.

Unfortuantely we're living in a world were corporations have growing power.

And we're not talking about someone who was just a founder of a company he was the figurehead of that company. Its spokesperson. He was the very image of that company. Whenever a new product rolled out his image was there, on stage, showing it off.

This isn't the faceless, barely known CEO, of Conglomco or something along those lines. This was a man whom millions or billions of people saw and connected with Apple.

And another company is trying to profit off of that. That another company has decided to try and to make a profit of Jobs' image is, in fact, evidence of this.

Steve Jobs was as much of a symbol of Apple as the the bitten apple is. That considerably more than any other CEO or employee of a company. The only other people who stand out as much as figureheads of their companies would be Colonel Sanders (KFC) and Dave Thomas (Wendy's.)
