"John Carter of Mars" Moving Ahead!

Since The Asylum put out a terrible version of A Princess of Mars is John Carter (the character, not the movie) in the public domain?

I think the first book is in the public domain and the character of John Carter is owned by ERB Inc.

the first six 'Barsoom' novels are public domain. thats why we see things like the Asylum movie and the Dynamite comic series.

I think it depends on the law in a given country. I know rather certainly that all twelve Barsoom novels are in the public domain, but that doesn't mean they're in the public domain in every country.

What, you've never heard a High Martian accent?

Seriously though, what accent should Martians have?
An American one, if they're from Mars, PA; Mars Hill, NC; or Mars Hill, Maine.

They should either have the accent that the actor really has, or one that's made up as deliberately "Martian," assuming that it doesn't come off corny (which is often the problem with The Clone Wars).

For Lynn Collins to have a British accent for no good reason is going to constantly call attention to itself. Why introduce a distraction that adds nothing to the movie? OTOH, for John Carter to be from Virginia but not have even an attempt at a Virginian accent is also going to call attention to itself, if less distractingly.

Since the character will be speaking in "Martian" why does it matter what accent she has? It's not like Carter will teach her English. He'll be learning and speaking Martian. It's only presented in "English" because thats what the audience understands.

Certain English accents are shorthand for royalty anyway and she is a Princess of Mars.

Sigh. The first trailer was kind of promising, but the latest just makes it look like another overblown videogame movie.

Not yet. The film comes out in March so the toy line if there is one should be out in the next month or so. I haven't seen any previews of anything myself.

@Timothy just because it is a Disney film doesn't mean it is going to have a toy line. Again as I said I've not seen any thing about a line from any of the previews I've seen online regarding film toy tie-ins coming out this year. This isn't surprising. There were genre films without a toy line last year as well. Like "X-Men: First Class" for instance, which was disappointing to me.
