If the threadbomb is following the narrative of that scene from Game of Thrones at all, Shran's explanation makes more sense. In the show, the guy who is being executed abandoned his post (which is punishable by death), but explained that he and his party had only left after having been attacked by an ancient race called the White Walkers, who everyone had believed to be extinct for thousands of years. Therefore, his story was completely unbelievable and they executed him anyway.
