Man Vs Food

Vulagr

So who here watches this show?

The show is all about one guy (one Adam Richman) who goes around the country and takes on different eating challenges.

For example, eating challenges like this:

He has his own blog on the Travel Channel website, if you're interested.

But damn, that's one big hamburger. unfortunately, around my neck of the woods, there are not restaurants that have eating challenges. And I'm a bit envious that he does get to go to places that have challenges like this. I still don't even understand how he is able to eat that much food at one sitting either.

While watching the show I also learned of the Habanero pepper. One habenero pepper is equal to sixteen jalapeno peppers. And he's taken on some challenges that has lots of those habanero peppers.

So, this is not a bad show, but it will make you hungry when you watch it.

I see ads for it on the Travel Channel but it looks like it's probably too disgusting to tolerate. Who wants to watch some fat schlub shoveling food down his gullet? Ech.

This gets shown on one of the channels here; can't remember which one. It's pretty fun actually. The host has a fair bit of charisma, some of the food leading up to the big challenge of the week looks tasty, and the challenges themselves are often genuinely disgusting in terms of the sheer quantity of food he has to down, so it has that fun freak show aspect to it too. Even his mother was concerned for his health in one ep she guested in.

Adam doesn't do the food challenges himself any more. Instead the show has been rebranded as Man v. Food Nation and someone else in the city he visits does the actual challenge. It's still very entertaining and this way he doesn't have to worry as much about the health issues.

Yeah I discovered "Man Vs Food" last summer and became a fan. Not really liking "Man Vs Food Nation" but it is still entertaining. This and "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" are my two favourite food related shows.

It is a fun show, aside from the challenges I like seeing the recipes and concoctions from other parts of the country. I'm waiting for him to take the show international which would make it much more entertaining.

Some of the challenges are pretty weak, but some of them are pretty insane. Anytime Adam says it is over five pounds of food I know it is going to be a real challenge.

Oh, and dairy and starches are the true challenge killers. He always seems to have problems with those.

I love it and it disgusts me at the same time. I had never heard of the show until he was here in Denver filming a show and the local news did a story about it.
I go to the Jack n Grill restaurant where he did the seven pound burrito challenge pretty regularly, and I always joke about doing the challenge, but I can just barely get through the regular burrito which is a little over one pound.

Alton Brown got into a little war with Richman over Twitter about how he finds the show reprehensible and an abomination to food.

Well, not so much an abomination to food, but rather Brown said that he detested the show because he considers it nothing more than a celebration of waste and gluttony -- which isn't an unreasonable opinion.

Oh, that sounds like quite a downgrade.

I've seen the original show a few times - it's OK, the guy has a fun line in banter, some of the foods give me ideas, but it's not something I make a point of watching on a regular basis.

Recently caught some of the first season and it does make me hungry because he shows some fantastic things. The food challenges straddle being gross and attractive though. Not a huge fan of the host's personalty at times and he comes off as a bit of a douche.

From the very limited eps I've seen the only challenges I'd like to do are the 2 kilo steak...which I don't think I'd have a hope of and the giant pizza, partly because I think it would be fun to try with a certain friend, not that I think we'd get close.

I've not watched MvF or triple D for a while now, but I always got a kick out of watching these guys enthusing over the food. I also fully expect one of them to go Mr Creosote one of these days

I tune in from time to time if it's on. The food at some of the places he visits before the eating challenge looks pretty good. Makes me want to keep note of them in case I'm in a position to drop by. I should check out the show's website to see if these places are listed there.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say about Adam Richman and the show...

A self-educated food expert, since 1995 he has kept a travel journal including each of the restaurants he visited and what he learned from the trip. Although described as "a bit on the husky side", to maintain his health while indulging for the show, Richman exercises twice a day while he's on the road. When the schedule permits, he does not eat the day before a challenge and he tries to stay "crazy hydrated" by drinking lots of water or club soda and forgoing coffee or soft drinks. After taping for a challenge is complete, Richman spends an hour or so on a treadmill, telling the Las Vegas Review-Journal, "Being sedentary is incredibly uncomfortable. [...] [D]espite the fact that the first 10 minutes or 15 minutes on the treadmill might suck, it actually does alleviate a lot of pressure, and you feel better."

I watch the show occasionally. The food that Adam eats is amazing.

I hope he's eating healthy when he is not filming, because the food he eats is not good for him.

Alton declaring the show a waste and a celebration of gluttony is an interesting comment because I'm sure that there would be fans of the show who would agree with him but in a positive way!! I'm gonna go on a limb and guess that Alton is probably not a fan of competitive eating either. I think some of the challenges that Adam has attempted on the show are pretty ridiculous, he himself on the show many times has berated himself or acknowledged the stupid factor of attempting some of the major outrageous ones. I have to admit that most of the challenges I would not even attempt, maybe the fun ones like the pizza or dessert ones. I like the segment where he goes and visits different places and samples their food. Man Vs Food is a bit like Triple D but with the challenge aspect involved.

Well, here's Brown's exact quote:

"I think it's a sin," he states. "That show is about gluttony, and gluttony is wrong. It's wasteful. Think about people that are starving to death and think about that show. I think it's an embarrassment."

I can't really say I disagree with him ... but then again, I don't get the appeal of watching someone cram unhealthy amounts of food down their throat just for the sake of doing it.

Yeah I don't disagree with him either, but I also think the show is a celebration about good food and the fun in eating good food as well. The challenges are the least entertaining part of the show for me even though they are really the gimmick of the show it's self. It is what makes the show different from Triple D or any of the other similar shows that explore places across the states.

Honestly, I have to say Brown has become a little too full (pardon the pun) of himself lately.

Which is sad because GE remains one of my all-time favorite programs, food related or otherwise, and I used to really like him.

Triple D is my fave. I have places on my list to visit now, should I go to Missouri for my cousin's graduation.
