Okay so I got this awesome mug the other day..

Nice, isn't it? Took it out of the box finally and looking at the base I find this sticker attached:

Seriously.. wtf? And since I'm not in the state of California am I safe?

Welcome to the wonderful world of California’ infamous Proposition 65, otherwise known as “The Everything You Eat, Drink, Breathe or Touch Is Bad For You (Or Your Fetus) Initiative.”

Most of us natives pay as much attention to those warning labels as we do to car alarms.

How the hell can a COFFEE CUP cause reproductive harm?
That all depends where you put it, I suppose.

That is a very odd warning label. Why is California hiding knowledge of these chemicals from the rest of the world?!

it is most certainly the ink beneath the glaze. Solution - don't chip off the glaze and eat the ink.

It's also badly written, should be "and other reproductive harm" rather than "on other", unless that is some groovy CA slang I'm unaware of.

The ink you say? So if it cracks it seeps out? Or.. you crack it and then drink hot drinks from it for the next 20 years and small bits of ink toxins leak into your system poisoning your uterus.

Cancer! Birth defects! OTHER reproductive harm! That is like super scary stuff Mr. Spock.

Haha, those crazy Californians with their wacky legislation warning people about lead and cadmium in the paint on their coffee mugs. Unbelievable!

Star Trek Coffee Mug

You'll never make it to Deep Space Nine or Babylon or even the Next Generation without your morning fuel (coffee). This 11oz Mug is the perfect way to start your day. Product Details: Attention California Residents. Proposition 65 WARNING: The colored artwork or designs used on this product contains lead and/or cadmium, a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects and other reproductive harm.
Mmmmmmmmmm, cadmium.

NBC Universal sells the mugs, and they're HQ'd in New York, but if they sell it through their NBC Store here, they have to include the label. I'm sure New York probably has their own version too, being crazy hippies who don't like not knowing about toxic materials in their coffee mugs, too. They probably make the cups in China or something, hence the cadmium and lead content.

Probably a good idea. Once you start washing the mugs, the paint inevitably starts chipping and fading, which is not good if you're drinking from it.

Prop. 65 may have been written and voted into law with good intentions, but those damn warnings show up in so many places that most folks here just ignore them. It’s the “cry wolf” syndrome.

Hell, anything can kill you in large enough amounts. It’s the dose that makes the poison, as they say.

It seems that just about *everything* is known () to the state of California to cause cancer. I bought some plywood recently here in Alabama that had that stupid warning label printed on it.

Yeah, I wouldn't drink out of it. Not cause of the label, but just as a matter of course I don't drink out of mugs like that. To me, they've always seemed more like a collectible sort of thing rather than a day to day usage sort of thing.

it is most certainly the ink beneath the glaze. Solution - don't chip off the glaze and eat the ink.

but...but.. it's so tasty :(

California seems to have stronger laws regarding chemicals. On various pieces of computer hardware similar labels can be found, even when you buy them in Europe.
