Best TOS novel?

I would also throw in the hat:

Ishmael and Ghost Walker by Barbara Hambly, she seemed to capture the Star Trek characters nicely and told fun stories.
I havent read her third TOS book Crossroad yet.

I have fond memories of ISHMAEL myself, above and beyond the fact that I just love that there's an actual STAR TREK/HERE COMES THE BRIDES crossover novel . . ..

Since I can't pick a favorite TOS novel, here are my top five in no particular order:

Crossroad
Prime Directive
Crucible McCoy
Ex Machina
Ghost Walker

Crossroad is one of my all-time favourites. I love it.

Hear, hear! I was skimming page one and was surprised not to see this mentioned. Along "The Final Reflection", "Crossroad" is definitely among the best Trek novels I've read.

I'll never forget the feeling of total immersion in "The Entropy Effect". After reading all the Bantam novels, this first Pocket original raised the bar several notches. "Yesterday's Son", "Uhura's Song", "Strangers from the Sky", "Prime Directive" and "Crucible: McCoy" are all very solid reads. "The Wounded Sky" if you prefer a bit techier.
Ditto these are wonderful books A.C. Crispins Sarek Novel is really good. All of Diane Duanes novels.Uhura's song by Melissa Snodgrass. Strangers form the sky, Final frontier Best destiny,Corona, Startrek 2 the wrath of khan and startrek 3 movie novelizations.Another McCoy novel I like Dreams of the Raven by Carmen Carter and Crisis on cetauraus by Brad ferguson.Chimes at Midnight from the Myriad universe books where David Marcus and Saavik are the main characters in the story.

The ones I consider the best are:

Spock's World
Federation
The Entropy Effect
Killing Time (yes, it's one of my favorites, so there!)
How Much For Just the Planet?
Crucible - McCoy

There may be others I'm missing, but I'm several years behind in my reading.

Killing Time (yes, it's one of my favorites, so there!)
Mine too. I have fond memories of it. I loved the alternate reality and, far more than that, the bizarro WHAT THE FUCK AM I READING?!?!? feeling as I realized that the author really was unsubtly hinting at what I thought she was hinting at (and, yeah, it was a first edition)

Best TOS Trek novel ever?

I've read several and nothing really clicked with me. Is there a consensus as to the best TOS trek novel ever written? If so, I will give it a try.

I am the OP. I somehow missed all of these responses. Many thanks. I will try the top 5 (or so) most mentioned and see how it goes.

enterprise the first adventure
prime directive
doctor's orders
timetrap
mutiny on the enterprise
killing time
final frontier
the idic epidemic
Black Fire
the vulcan academy murders

those are some of my earlist favorites.
