Just had an earthquake in the east coast. Felt it here in northern nj, shook my house.

Eta... Reports are it was a 5.8 magnitude with the epicenter located in VA. DC is evacuating government buildings.

There are other reports that it was a 6.0 mag quake.

More... Quake was reportedly felt as far north as Boston, ma and as far south as charleston, sc. Cell phone service in VA area has been effected.

I just felt it, here in the city. I've been unable to open CNN.com and my wife said cell service isn't working great.

Sorry, but ...

I guess I've lived in California all my life to think something like that is so insignificant.

Well, remember that most places aren't built around the idea of earthquakes. I know building codes in DC, VA, and other eastern states just aren't anywhere near the level of California, which means more structural damage and casualty due to that less robust building code.

Apparently the pentagon evacuation started because they thought it may have been a terror attack, with many who were in the building on 9/11 saying it felt the same to them...

I'm an hour north of Philly and thought I was going nuts. The wind happened to gust at the same time and I was like "shit, the house is falling" or something. Then it stopped so I called some ppl and was like "Uhm... yeah," and they replied "Did you feel it too?" and I knew I was not nuts. LOL.

When I was 7 we went out to SoCal to visit my aunt and they had a quake then, big enough to wake us up and stuff, but not big enough to shut down Universal studios which we went to that day, lol.

JFK and Newark Liberty airports have both had operations suspended. The control towers have been evacuated and have to be inspected for damage before operations can continue.

DC police are advising people to not go onto the subway because of aftershock threat.

Apparently a DC police officer was overheard talking about starting an evacuation of the area around the Washington monument because of reports that it may be "leaning"

Most of my coworkers had no idea what was happening. I had to tell them "it's an earthquake!" Silly New Jerseyans. It was a pretty leisurely quake by my experience. Probably much more alarming near the epicenter.

I felt it on the 10th floor of my office in Fairfax, VA. No mandatory evacuation, but a bunch of us stepped outside for a while to be on the safe side. No apparent damage, though, so I'm back at my desk now.

We definitely felt it on Cape Cod; Abby called me from home in Plymouth... she said the house suddenly shook and scared the bajeebuz out of her.

My office building is near Dulles Airport in Northern Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC. When the first tremor happened several of us peeked over our cube walls like a bunch of meerkats going "What was that?" "Did you feel that?" Then about 10 seconds later the real shaking started, and EVERYONE was jumping up and looking around, not sure what to do. When the shaking stopped about 10 seconds later, we all just sort of looked around at each other for a second and then burst out laughing :)
