The Curse of Fenric was the penultimate Doctor Who story in the classic series. In it, the Doctor and Ace journey to a WWII base and a town with London evacuees, where a scientist is developing a code-breaking computer, which unwittingly releases Fenric, a creature from north mythology and an evil from the dawn of time-and an old enemy of the Doctor's (Although one that was never seen before, but presumabely fought against the Second Doctor) who the Doctor imprisoned in the past using a game of chess. The serial otherwise has a somewhat convulted plot, with Russians, vampires, norse mythology, the meaning of faith and time paradoxes....for more info, here's a summary of the story: http://www.drwhoguide.com/who_7m.htm
Now I have to wonder, in the latest trailer we see another of the 'eye patch' people, with an old mask, but curiously, wearing a Vikingish helmet and furs. Perhaps more revealing, however, is that he/she is sitting at a chess table. Given that Norse/Viking mythology and chess were both identified with Fenric, could this be the return of him? The look's a bit different than the bodies possessed in Curse of Fenric, maybe that's what he really looks like.
Granted, Fenric might not be the most well-known of WHO villains from the original series, but neither were say, the Macra or Meglos (The latter who almost appeared in the Lodger). Also makes more sense than Omega to me.
