Torchwood: Miracle Day premiere date

Miracle Day press screening in London tonight, and at that event RTD confirmed that, although no UK transmission date has been announced yet, Miracle Day will definitely air in the US first.

Idiots.

Hands up anyone in the UK/Ireland who won't be downloading it hours after it airs on Starz?

I won't be, probably wouldn't even know where to look. I'm dreadfully behind the times :)

Well there you have it, at least 4 pretty big fans who are online in a discussion forum, pretty much the core audience, who won't be downloading it. Either says we have no faith in the show, or that a few days doesn't matter.

Would be interesting to hear the BBC reasons for not showing it before the States, which could be because it's a UK-US co-production. But after Canada and Australia as well, don't remember them co-finiacing it.

I think the BBC is wrong to keep us waiting, but given that we have a start date, and it is less than 7 days, I will do the decent thing.

That said I dont blame anybody who doesnt.

May be that Starz are paying the Lion's share and have the international sales rights and BBC only has the UK rights?

Well I don't tend to download anything, I just need to avoid spoilers for a week.

As for why it isn't airing simultaenously, who knows. I guess Starz decided when they were showing it, so maybe its just a BBC decision as to how it best works into their schedule?

Maybe we should all email them demanding it be shown at the same time

It depends on how much buzz and discussion the show generates. The general rule of thumb I've encountered is 7 days. Beyond that, people will download. But an exception is if an episode arises that is expected to generate so much spoiler discussion that short of removing oneself from the Internet it becomes near impossible to avoid spoilers. A Good Man Goes to War was a textbook example. Canadian and American fans who wanted to wait the week before seeing the episode had to take extraordinary care to avoid being spoiled about the events in that episode. Australian and New Zealand fans probably had no chance at all unless they removed themselves from all discussion about Doctor Who. I didn't want to take the chance, and I'm in Canada, so I chose to download the episode. And that's the fault of BBC America and Space for falling out of synch with the UK; and if anyone takes umbrage at that, I'll be buying the Blu-ray, so silver will cross the BBC's palm eventually.

In the case of Miracle Day, odds are you won't see people lining up to download episode 1 or 2 or 3 or whatever; if the delay is only a few days, or even a week, I don't see it being a major issue. But as the story begins to resolve itself, and certainly when the final arrives, people are not going to wait.

I am surprised that the BBC didn't announce the airdate at the BAFTA event (didn't anyone ask during the Q&A?). Between this and what appears to be an ongoing fiasco regarding messaging over Doctor Who's next year, I'm really wondering what it'll take for the BBC to get its house in order. They could get away with this back when it was the only game in town, or one of two, but that's no longer the case.

For what it's worth, if the positions were reversed (airing in UK first, US/rest-of-the-world later) I would find a way to watch it as soon as possible.

During Children of Earth, I made the mistake of reading an issue of Entertainment Weekly, which announced the shocking death of...

Ianto

...the day before it aired in the US. Because the EW folks had watched it either through a press screening, or more likely, through other means.

I told myself I wouldn't get spoiled like that again. And I've taken steps to make sure that doesn't happen.

Do we must have missed that announcement.

Though my earlier point still stands how can the BBC justify to license payers, that we are getting a UK orginating show after the US (which they can say is down to co-producing issues). Still doesn't excuse the fact that we are getting after Australia and Canada.

And it's a co-producing with BBC Wales, BBC Worldwide and Starz.

Though you never now perhaps par tof the deal is that the BBC gets to air S5 of Torchwood first.

The majority of the budget came from Starz and the BBC had no interest in making any more Torchwood themselves; so it's more of a US show with some BBC funding than the other way around now.

Digital Spy gave a date of July 14th

I do wonder what will happen if Starz decide they want to do another series and the BBC don't?

Well if Miracle Day is a ratings success, and if Starz are still putting in most of the money, it'd be hard to see why the BBC wouldn't do another series?
