The big one for me would be not reusing Romulan ships as Klingons in TOS.
I didn't have a problem with that as long as they could have painted them differently. But some more variety in Starfleet ships on TOS would have been appreciated.
It was the other way around. In "The Enterprise Incident," Matt Jefferies' Klingon battlecruiser played the role of the Romulan ships (with a bit of throwaway dialog to explain why the Romulans were using a Klingon ship design). Ironically, we saw the Klingon ship being used by Romulans before we saw it being used by Klingons!
That actually would have been a great way to show the differences between the two races. The old D-7's with the painted on birdwings? Awesome.
The Romulan warbird was overused. I can see how you could get away with it to a point - the Romulans would send their strongest ship to counter the Enterprise in TNG. But what about when they didn't intend to face off - like when they sent a ship after Admiral Jarok in "The Defector"? The warbird was overkill against his scout. I think a regular cruiser would have been good, or an older ship. Though nothing out of TOS - I didn't like the use of K'tinga on DS9.

Also (just because I found it) I like this Dominion strike cruiser from one of the games for its bridging the esthetic gap between the small beetle-like attack fighter and the larger, more angular, cruiser and battleship.
There'd be copyright issues with these but I like them and wanted to share.

Perhaps they should have solely made them Romulan, and had a different design for the Klingons?
Only limited exposure to TOS-R, which ep was it? Maybe I can Netflix it.
Haven't seen that design since DC Comics The Doomsday Bug.

TBH, I don't care. They probably would have used Andrew Probert's Ambassador-class prototype (not the version seen) in place of some of the Excelsiors in TNG, but ...meh. I'm fine with what we got in Trek.
And one of these ships was changed to a Romulan bird of prey, of the same design as from "Balance of Terror".
Just pulled up the Enterprise Incident scene on YouTube , kinda small on my iPhone but I liked what I could see.
I think that if they'd built something closer to the original design, we'd have seen more of the Ambassador Class - certainly in the fleet battles on DS9.
Using an Excelsior to haul cargo was a bit much. I'm all for them not reusing old designs and re-tasking those on the threshold of being decommissioned, but gutting an old top-of-the-line ship doesn't seem to be as worth it for the effort and the returns.

Interesting factoid about the use of the Warbird to chase the scout in the Defector.
That episode boasts some new, smaller and more detailed models than had been used before, and this was the first episode to feature them. The warbird, the scout, and even the D were all new models, and, in the case of the Enterprise and the Warbird, they were smaller and far more detailed then before, so using the Warbird was a conscious decision, and it made a great opening for this show. There is even a shot which all three vessels are seen at once.

Are you sure about that re the Warbird? The Warbird model was never very big, and it seems unlikely they'd have gone to the trouble of building a new one for as seldom as it was used
