Fifty States - a Bucket List Moment

Oh, I'm jealous. I've seen all but 13, but don't expect to hit all 50. I've missed: Alaska, Hawaii, Vermont (barely :( and the same for Colorado), Kentucky, Wisconsin, Michigan, S. Dakota, Kansas, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

Stupid Northwest. :p Too far away.

You didn't miss much in Road Island.

What did you think of Virginia / West Virginia? I have never been to either but have had two people tell me that the area is their least favorite in America and I'm trying to figure out why.

I have been to all of New England, NY, Georgia, Florida, and I think the airports of Texas, and Illinois.

I have been to:

Maryland
New York
Michigan
California
Nevada
Colorado

And I know it's not a State, but D.C. too.

I have also passed through Pennsylvania and I think Delaware on the train.

I think that is not bad considering I live in England.

I can say the same thing about the northeast. What is there to do in Maine, for example.

Maine is a thorn in my balls on the way to Canada. Nice for a long weekend, but a whole lot of unincorporated areas with nothing.

The lobster shacks are fun though.

Acadia is soooooo overrated, how is that a national park? I can understand preserving it, but I've been to better state parks.

Below are the states I've been to. The states that I've lived in or visited extensively to the point where I could not possibly count how many times I've gone there, are in bold.

New Hampshire
Massachusetts
Vermont
Connecticut
Rhode Island
Maine
New York
New Jersey
Pennsylvania
Delaware
West Virginia
Ohio
Maryland
Kentucky
Virginia
North Carolina
South Carolina
Georgia
Florida
Tennessee
Indiana
Illinois
Iowa
Nebraska
Colorado
Wyoming
North Dakota
Kansas
Missouri
Alaska
Utah
Nevada
California
Arizona
New Mexico
Texas
Louisiana
Mississippi
Alabama
Washington

That makes 40. I've been at the airport in Minnesota and Michigan, but I haven't truly visited either states.

I have also passed through Pennsylvania and I think Delaware on the train.

If it was Amtrak, it would go through Delaware, yeah.

I think that is not bad considering I live in England.

I can say London, Oxford, and Liverpool for the UK. Not much, but I plan to work on that.

Concerning Virginia:

Pros;

  • Colorful fall foliage, amazing vistas in mountain areas in mid October (would apply to WV as well)
  • Numerous Civil war battlefields including the surrender site at Appomattox and first ironclad battle near Newport News
  • JFK's grave, tomb of unknowns and Iwo Jima memorial in Arlington Cemetery (grounds were General Lee's before the war)
  • Pentagon
  • Mount Vernon (G. Washington estate)
  • Tour the first English settlement in North America (Jamestown)
  • Tour the restored colony capital at Williamsburg (plus Busch Gardens!)
  • Revolutionary war surrender site at Yorktown
  • Resort beaches
  • Summer pony swim at Chincoteague

Cons;

  • Traffic backups can be pretty bad approaching water barriers like Hampton Roads (between Hampton and Norfolk) and the Potomac River during morning/afternoon commutes and beginning and end of summer weekends (Hampton Roads).

^to Bigdaddy, just because two people you know disliked Virginia doesn't meant you will. People have different tastes.

Virginia is a big state. Arlington is not Williamsburg is not Virginia Beach is not Lynchburg.

I have been through much of both VA and WV and found both beauty and sadness, just like every other state. Tha Appalacian areas can be breathtaking and DC is a wealth of history, architecture and excitement. There is no state in the country that I would hesitate to visit again.

Do you know/Remember what counties you went to when you were in Pennsylvania? @ Mutai.

I wasn't a huge fan of Oxford. It might have been the pretentious tour guide and his tendency to just point out things that the movie version of Hogwarts was based on. It could also have been that it was a fairly miserable day. I do want to visit Bath and probably Avebury (as well as a few places in Scotland).

London :D

London's split up over like 4 counties (counting all 32 London Boroughs). (Just so you know.) :)

They are:

Essex
Kent
Middlesex
Surrey

Oxford's in Oxfordshire and Liverpool, Merseyside.

I've heard of that, is that by Wood Green?

What, St John's Wood? Not really. About 5 miles or so I'd guess, which in London terms is about the same as going from Earth to the Moon. Probably quicker to get to the Moon though.
