I got the feeling Chakotay died when Harry Kim was on that 4 year deep space mission. The way he apologized to her for missing the funeral during that opening party, not to mention the way she turned away and couldn't look at him suggested THAT funeral was even more important to her than all the other ones.
Then again... I am and always will be a rabid J/Cer... and can usually rationalize things to work in my favor.
See I always thought it was then too. But then one day I examined his grave marker and it said a date that wasn't really synonymous with the whole timeline. And that screwed me up.
I think that's my thing with "Memorial" is I can rationalize something to be J/C even when it's not. Like when the Admiral and Captain are walking down corridors of Voyager and Captain Janeway doesn't react in the way the Admiral wants her to until she says that Chakotay was married to Seven, that could be seen as her angry that C/7 happens because she loses Seven or Chakotay.
And I can forgive Admiral Janeway for changing time to save her foster daughter, her foster brother and her would be lover... BECAUSE in doing so she (inadvertantly) killed the FREAKING BORG QUEEN!!!!!!
I always put Tuvok as a father figure.
He loved her like a father would a rebellious teen, but that was my perspective.

... That cemetary scene just rips my heart out everytime I see it. When she leans down to brush the marker clear... sigh. I wonder "who" is going to do that if she fails in her mission.
JANEWAY: Any final words of advice for your old Captain? Wait, don't tell me. I'm being impulsive, I haven't considered all the consequences, it's too risky. Thanks for the input but I've got to do what I think is right. I know it wasn't easy living all these years without her Chakotay, but when I'm through things might be better for all of us. Trust me.
This is what gets me.
She's not changing history because "She" wants a second chance at Chakotay.
She's changing history so HE can have a second chance with Seven... and vice a versa.

I understand the "she's being selfish" argument because she's putting her needs above the needs of the REST of the UNIVERSE... and yet, when all is said and done... if the Admiral succeeded as planned both she AND the Captain would still end up "alone"...
She's putting the needs of her crew, above the needs of the rest of the universe.

But I'm watching because I wasn't alive for Charles and Diana's. And I've had so many jokes made that my birthday just happens to fall on that day, more of they chose that day.

I was alive for C&D but barely remember. TBH, not particularly bothered but it will pass the time if nothing else...and one thing I am proud of my country for is that we do pageantry/pomp & circumstance REALLY well
(like classical acting). I used to live close to Hyde Park and it was always fun to see cavalry rehearsing drills first thing in morning.

(I hope ...it's now 00.18 on 29th). Mexico is fun (although have only bad memories of almost-flight-to-doom). But American friends who've been here have always gone home with new love for UK (especially as food in major cities is a lot better now). Particularly museums, art, buildings and countryside...
